I’m grateful and honoured to be on this shortlist with such an interesting and varied range of books. This list is testament to the exciting reach of French Studies, from Medieval Translation to Edith Piaf.

Thanks again to @edinburghup.bsky.social and @stedmundhall.bsky.social.

And there is a special mention: Kairos, by Jenny Erpenbeck, trans. by Michael Hofmann (Granta).

“Michael Hofmann’s taut, vivid and agile translation does eloquent justice to the inner and outer worlds of characters locked into private, and public, histories of doomed desires and broken dreams.”
A photograph of Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck, translated from German by Michael Hofmann and published by Granta, stood on its spine on a wooden desk against a brick wall.

This is the first time that a poetry collection has won the prize. The judges commented: “This volume is an epic achievement: it wrests a visionary language, where tragedy and transcendence meet, from the darkest places of 20th-century experience.”
