Many families move to housing they did not find through an active housing search, what we call "opportunity finds." We argue that understanding residential sorting requires considering not only how households search for housing, but also how they learn about and connect with housing more broadly.

The Republican bill plans to implement the work requirements in 1 year. This is an impossible timeline. States don't the capacity to do this without kicking massive numbers of people off of Medicaid. [Great Upshot piece on the final bill] www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...
“The idea they’re going to be able to stand up these fairly complicated systems to implement a work requirement seems unlikely, unless they do it in ways that just basically put all of the burdens on individuals,” said Pamela Herd, a professor of social policy at the University of Michigan, who has co-written a book about how administrative burdens affect participation in government programs. “If they implement it poorly, they’re just going to end up kicking tons of people off the program.”

Neat! (And congratulations!)

I think this notion of doubling up as a "private safety net" is also a nice way to think about our recent findings for how people deal with housing shortage in Canada.
