Had an advising appointment with the parent of a toddler today, so I rolled out the handy dandy cart of kid entertainments.

(It could be a basic backpack or duffel in the department office, too.)

At some point I passed a major milestone without noticing. More than 1000 blog posts. Some of them crappy, but none are lightweight. Huh.

Thanks y'all for the conversations, wisdom, humor, kindness, and insights.

I know a professor at Santa Monica College, who mentioned that the White House just went after them like the big R1s.

Why go after a community college that takes in few federal dollars? What gives?

I had a theory. Looked up the president of SMC. Yup.

Also Steven Miller is from Santa Monica.

I hate gerrymandering with the heat of a thousand suns, but I unconditionally love the fact that it's named after a guy named Gerry who drew a voting district shaped like a salamander.

When was the last time you've listened to Graceland. You might want to listen to Graceland again. It's really good.

When I bought this book (which was only just reissued), they gave me a baggie of peace cranes. Which I just hung next to my desk. And this note.

The “Cranes of Gratitude” are from 102-year old George Oda, who was incarcerated at Manzanar.

I hope they can give you a bit of hope and resolve too.

Much of the book describes the conditions on the site and how the wrongly imprisoned Americans made the most of their circumstances. There are dozens of portraits.

It’s a substantial volume. Of course it has landscapes of the area. While this is one of the most gorgeous views in California (and that’s saying quite a lot!), the site itself is dry, wind swept, cold in winter and hot in summer, and far from most everything.
