This thread below is criminally under-liked and under-shared!

Young #Drosophila researchers (PhDs, postdocs, and early-career Drosophilists): fill out the survey by Sept 1st to get matched with a mentor who can support you with your career.

Established Drosophilists, like/share Shefali's Thread ;)

Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”.
Good academics acknowledge this.
I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.
Illustration showing a graduation ceremony, with speaker addressing graduates: “Let the example of my fluke success guide nearly all of you to crushing disappointment”.

It is impressive to see the lack of accountability but this is a common thing in many parts of the world sadly, not only in the Mack Planck.

For future students and post-docs, inform yourself well before joining a lab, attitudes like this should not be supported

Hello new friends! I'm Cassandra, a vector biologist at Institut Pasteur and today is my official first day as a #newPI!!! My team will study virus-virus-host interactions using mosquitoes, specifically the influence of the mosquito virome on the transmission of arboviruses like dengue and Zika 🧵1/5

Last week we @akhorramnejad.bsky.social publish a paper on how climate change could alter mosquitoes-virus interactions

Here is a blog post in Research Communities from @springernature.com summarising our results using a less technical language and telling the #BehindthePaper go.nature.com/41fy80U
Warmer sicker? Or warmer stronger? How climate change shapes mosquito immunity.

Our results highlight the importance of multigenerational studies when trying to predict how mosquitoes will react to global warming🧵(5/5)

(3) cost of infection or reproductive output of infected mosquitoes.

We found that there is an increase after one generation but after ten generations mosquitoes have similar reproductive output than standard mosquitoes 🧵(4/5)

(2) Resistance or the ability for mosquitoes to clear the viral infection

We found that after being exposed for a single generation to heat their resistance increased, but after being exposed for ten generations the resistance returned to the same level of standard mosquitoes 🧵(3/5)

We meassure 3 different parameters.
(1)Tolerance or the ability for mosquitoes to maintain health at high viral concentrations.

We found that the tolerance of mosquitoes increased after being exposed to heat for one generation and it increased even more after ten generations 🧵(2/5)

Check out our paper, co-authored by @akhorramnejad.bsky.social and me. Published in @commsbio.bsky.social

We explore how global change will affect mosquito-virus interaction. We use single or multi-generational exposure to heat to address this.
