Yes, I know this is an upgrade situation, but some of the most expensive flights I've taken in my life were to and from Charlottesville. At least the airport is small and easy to arrive at and depart from.

I looked back @cvilleschools.bsky.social timeline on deciding to place police back in schools despite evidence that this move actively harms kids and found that it seems to be based on an analysis conducted by a firm called Navigate360.

There simply is no substitute for the time-, personnel-, & $$$-intensive way of providing quality education. That we don't want to pay for it, as a society, does not make this any less true, & AI cannot fix that. At best, it can poorly substitute for the real solution.

Sure we could reduce the student to teacher ratio, and create an education system that we know works for students. But that would cost money, so bring in the slop.

Working with an expert personal tutor is generally regarded as the most efficient form of education15. A tutor can guide the student while providing personalized feedback and answering questions as they arise. Expert tutors will adapt their approach to a student’s individual ability, pace, and specific needs. They offer a more focused and efficient learning experience, managing the student’s cognitive load. In addition, personalized instruction can foster a growth mindset, which has been shown to promote students’ persistence in the face of difficulties16,17. While the advantages of personalized instruction are clear, this model of education cannot scale to meet the needs of a large number of students15.

Drawing on interviews and her own immersive ethnographic observations conducted over nearly six years, she finds that diversity and integration—especially via an increase in the proportion of white students—are treated by teachers, administrators, and parents as a de facto solution for racial inequality, and yet this is emphatically not the end result. Instead, Freidus observes that Black students’ experience of diversity entails a “hidden curriculum” that “reinforces deeply rooted [racial and class] assumptions about [them] and their families.” For instance, she notes several instances in which Black and white students with similar behavioral problems received disproportionate treatment, resulting partly from educators’ assumptions that the white student was more likely to be from a good family. At the same time, diversity does offer benefits for students—mostly in terms of enrichment, or new experiences—but as Freidus persuasively demonstrates, solving inequality is not one of them.
