After spending over an hour excavating our driveway, we're giving the bunnies the night off! Over 6" of wet snow and my shoulders and back are *tired*. Stay safe out there, and if you're in New England/Great Lakes/anyplace that does winter, mind the ice! ❄️

Spent the morning shoveling snow - and it's still coming down out there, so I'm afraid the bunnies are going to have to hang in there without being counted! (I suspect that most of them are snug in their burrows anyway, and are going to just sleep the whole mess off.) Stay safe out there!

Why I don't trust Pickled Pete Kegsbreath: in a word, he disobeys orders. I'm surprised his own troops didn't turn him in (& disappointed in them that they didn't). He was a loose cannon then, and woe to those on his promotion boards. Disgrace to the uniform.

We are expecting a lovely whomping load of snow tomorrow - perhaps 6-8" - but for right now, I'm enjoying the sunshine! 🌞
Tomorrow, I will *try* to, um... enjoy the exercise.

Bunny Count: 6 rabbits; 37°F, calm winds, fully (but lightly) overcast sky, and light rain/mist. Wet streets and grass everywhere; we've had mist/light snow all day. And water brings out the bunnies!
Also spent some quality time with my guitar today. 🎸😁
December 1, 2025 at 1:54 AM
Bunny Count: 2 rabbits; 30°F, light breezes, mostly clear skies. Traces of frost in the grass, and the moon clear and bright. Felt like winter, and I think the bunnies thought so too.
Lots of folx have decorated in red and white and green for the holidays, but many got started early this year.

Bunny Count: 2 rabbits. Chilly (33°F), breezy (maybe 5-10 MPH), and mostly clear skies, with the 1st quarter moon gleaming. 🌓 We had a brief mild snow squall about six hours ago; no accumulation. Not bad for November. 🦃 But at this point, the light jackets are hung up and the beefier coats emerge.

Skipped today's Bunny Count as I made the roast turkey and forgot to account for the fact that we stuff the bird, which slows down the cooking time. No, not with stuffing, actually. With wedges of orange and lemon and onion. Flavorful, but the cooking took longer than I accounted for!
But... yum. 🍗
November 28, 2025 at 2:44 AM
Bunny Count: 7 rabbits (in groups: 2, 3, and 2) on a rather warm (56°F), cloudy (& slightly rainy), calm evening! TBH, we rather expected more rabbits, as damp weather seems to bring them out. No other wildlife spotted tonight.
November 27, 2025 at 1:12 AM
Went to fencing practice tonight, and we saw no wildlife. Given the signs we saw on the route home, that's a good thing: apparently 25% of deer strikes happen in the month of November! Happily, we saw - and encountered - no deer! 🦌 Or any other critters. 😁
November 25, 2025 at 3:59 AM
Bunny Count: 13 rabbits (!), on a damp 37°F evening. We had light breezes (probably just coming off the river) and almost fully overcast skies.
It was snowing very briefly earlier; that quickly changed to light rain, which eventually stopped. Rain seems to make the bunnies emerge!

I was just a sergeant in the Army - and the National Guard at that. But I was deployed and got the briefing about illegal orders. We trust our officers to spot them as well. Our oath (to the Constitution) is our standard, and against which we are to be judged. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Bunny Count: 1 (!) rabbit. 37°F, light intermittent breezes, and a mostly clear sky tonight. That rabbit was less than half a block from the house; we were starting to wonder:
Could we be "skunked" if we didn't see a skunk? Would we score a "goose egg" if we saw no geese? 🦨🦢🥚🤣

Wildlife Inventory: 8 rabbits spotted on a mild (41°F), fully overcast, calm evening. But the 4 turkeys we had to wait for as they crossed the road this afternoon were quite beautiful (too fast for a picture, sorry). I suspect there were more, as these 4 were all hens, but who knows?

My sincere sympathies to all who've had to hear the kind of misogyny such name-calling involves. Our country (and certainly our so-called president) needs to do better.

Bunny Count: 3 rabbits (yes, it's cold outside). Our weather: 32°F, light breezes, and a VERY clear sky.
Honorable mention to the red-tailed hawk spotted by car, though!

This one's not just for the health/microbiology nerds: Bird flu is a threat, and it really looks like we're deliberately ignoring a likely transmission route (for various reasons, many of which have to do with lobbying and, you know, money).
Yikes.

Bunny Count: 3 rabbits on a chilly (32°F), clear, nearly calm evening. The air is quite dry, and we bundled up. There were a few small puddles of standing water left from rain we had a while back, but that's it. It's going to be a sparse winter, I think.
November 20, 2025 at 1:52 AM
Bunny Count: 6 rabbits on a chilly (35°F) somewhat windy, clear night. One of those bunnies was spotted at 0900 this morning, though, in my neighbor's lawn.
Well, he was there until she pulled out the electric leaf blower, anyway. (Bunnies *can* fly!)

Every time I go to an SCA event to serve as chirurgeon, I look up the nearest hospital, ER, and urgent care offices and list them on a sticky note inside my clipboard. Usually it's not needed, but on a few occasions it was.

Bunny Count: 1 rabbit. (Yep.) 35°F, windy, overcast; a bit too wintry for this time of year. And the bunnies said NOPE.
November 18, 2025 at 2:00 AM
Bunny Count: 3 rabbits (yep, that's it) on a rather blustery, 40°F day with almost fully overcast skies. Not sure if it was the wind or what, but the bunnies weren't having it.
We don't have snow on the ground yet, though; they're easier to spot in the snow. We'll see!
November 17, 2025 at 2:16 AM
Bunny Count: 6 rabbits, spotted on a chilly (36°F), fully overcast day with light breezes off the river. Those skies soon started dropping rain once we'd returned!
We're fortunate in that there's only rain in our forecast, though, and not snow. It's that time of year!

This woman is *angry*. And I, for one, agree with her.
Hey Republicans? Put up or shut up. And in the meantime, stop screwing up what little help we get with health care.
Forget extending the tax credits, now the Republicans are talking getting rid of the Affordable Care Act completely...
