The pundit class's notion of "free speech" is predicated on a division of humanity into those who *participate* in debates and those who are the *topic* of debate, where treating one of the former as if they were one of the latter is seen as the direst of all threats to "free speech".

(Also happy Sukkos, which I also seem not to have posted about in an optimally timely fashion.)

I know I'm a little late, but happy squirrel awareness month to all who observe!

Academia laid the blueprint for conflict-based engagement through constant bad-faith argumentation that later became central to social media algorithms.

Seriously, a lot of people made careers off of misinterpreting their opponents in the most insulting way possible.

Do Jews occupying this sort of marginal & tenuous ethnic & religious position have no sense of solidarity, as the article suggests, or is it perhaps that this experience has equipped them to feel solidarity for others being targeted for exclusion (or much worse) by nationalist & theocratic forces?

(I should at that the particular cultural, historical, political, and religious considerations that gave rise to this are complex, and it's probably unfair to take this as personally as I do, but I think it's also understandable that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.)

Literally my parents could not have gotten legally married there because marriage is the domain of religious authorities and none of those authorities would approve the type of religiously mixed marriage they were at the time.

Israel as an institution, and certain ideologues dedicated to a particular vision for what Israel is and should be, has a history of enacting hostility towards us.

Israeli Jews are diverse and think many different things about Jewish life and Jews in Israel and the diaspora.
i-rohl.bsky.social
I mean, I think that the "negation of the diaspora" link above and readily lookable-up facts about the state of Israeli family law are a sufficient answer to why they consider people like me collectively be a threat as a population/demographic. I really don't know what else to tell you.
i-rohl.bsky.social
Yeah I get that and I was trying to provide context for why I'd said it that I was hoping would help you better understand what I am and am not getting at.
i-rohl.bsky.social
Sorry my point was exactly that how observant I am is not really relevant to the main point. (I couldn't tell where you were coming from on this so I was trying to clarify that point in case you weren't up to speed on it.)
i-rohl.bsky.social
To a certain kind of nationalist ideologue (not every Zionists, of curse, and certainly not every Israeli), every safe, flourishing Jewish life in the diaspora is first and foremost a propaganda threat to the narrative that ostensibly justifies a Jewish ethnonationalist project in Israel/Palestine.
i-rohl.bsky.social
This second one isn't really about how religious anyone is insofar as plenty of people who subscribe to that thinking aren't especially observant or devout either, & wouldn't think of me hypothetically getting more observant and devout here in the US as an adequate way to address the issue.
i-rohl.bsky.social
... that, per the link above on the negation of the diaspora, many of them consider my life as a non-Israeli Jew to be an inferior, pitiable, or corrupted state of being.
i-rohl.bsky.social
What makes me personally think that many of them don't like me is that I'm a mischling so their official religious authorities regard my existence as an unfortunate development that should have been discouraged or prevented and ...

anyway if you set the sample to "me and my friends" every lithuanian in scotland i know is a supporter of literally dissolving the united kingdom so i guess we're not a model minority and therefore are fair game for racially targeted expulsion

One would assume that, as with most things, tastes vary.
i-rohl.bsky.social
I'm not sure how this difference is relevant to the question at hand. Like, how much someone likes and wants to cooperate with me is not a major factor in how ethical I think it would be to kill and eat them.
