'Now look alive:
there will be leaves again,
in the reeling of the sun.
You will bloom
in the land of the poppy.
Under its sky
it will strike you,
deadly and unbidden:
bliss.'
When ‘Threat’ was originally published in 1963, sexual relationships between members of the same sex were still illegal in Austria and East and West Germany. Legal recognition of partnerships wouldn’t come until the 21st century. The time in which Gunnar lived and wrote was undoubtedly dangerous for LGBTQ+ individuals, but it was not without joy; in spite of legal and social oppression, communities carved out a space in which to unite and support one another. ‘Threat’ speaks to this unflinching resilience, the belief that though you may be in hiding today, time will march on; ‘Nun erschrick’, (‘Now jump up’ or ‘Now startle’) because spring will come again, and in that time of rebirth will emerge countless opportunities for change. In an era where the rights of our community members are increasingly under fire, I look to voices like Gunnar, to people who stood fast in the face of imprisonment and systemic violence and worked toward a future that was not guaranteed, fueled by the strength of solidarity.
Beneath the pendulous gait slumber paradises of melancholy: sunken summers. In their meadows bloom midnight poppies. Your clouds wander along the dark sky deep beneath the ground, your shadow world. Now look alive: there will be leaves again, in the reeling of the sun. You will bloom in the land of the poppy. Under its sky it will strike you, deadly and unbidden: bliss.

The last time I went out in Barrow in Furness was 28 years ago and I probably got blotto and angry. Last night I went to this and watched young and old people celebrate together and it was utterly heartwarming

My laptop died while I was writing an MA essay & the only compatible spare i could find belonged to a friend who was demolishing a pub. He had to keep the laptop at the pub while he demolished it to check measurements so I literally rewrote the thing surrounded by flying debris & wrecking balls.
