Boundless Publishing Group Update: Dear All, I appreciate your patience with this seemingly impersonal email, but it is important that we get this information out to you in the most efficient manner. As you know, Unbound went into administration. Boundless Publishing Group is a new company, with new investors and management, which acquired the business of Unbound. Boundless has no legal obligation to pay any of the debts of Unbound; indeed, that is the effect of Unbound going into administration. However, Boundless Publishing Group’s management and new investors intend to preserve as much as possible the legacy of Unbound while building a stable and sustainable publishing house. As part of that intention, the new company set out a voluntary plan to honour historic obligations by making goodwill payments to authors and suppliers whose royalties and invoices remained unpaid under Unbound. The first such payment has been made. Payments due in the April 2025 statements are also counted as historic payments, as they relate to sales made prior to the inception of Boundless Publishing Group. In the meantime, the new investors have not received (nor are they seeking) any cash return, and I have been working for free. However, under the current conditions, the capital raised from new investors to launch Boundless Publishing Group is only sufficient to cover royalties generated from the date of Boundless’s formation. Therefore, until the company is on firmer financial footing, it will be unable to make further goodwill payments on historic royalties owed by Unbound. This decision, while incredibly difficult, reflects the reality of the company’s cash position. We simply do not have the cash at the moment to make further historic goodwill payments. What cash we have is focused on paying the salaries of our employees, ensuring our current committed publishing program is a success, and ensuring all royalties arising from the inception of this new company are paid on time. Our supportive investors are both fully committed to the long-term survival of the business and are behind the work we publish. They have focused Boundless Publishing Group on preserving its current operations and improving cash flow so it can continue publishing, rebuild trust, and return to addressing historic royalty payments from Unbound. We are acutely aware of the disappointment this causes for authors and partners, and for the delayed timing of this message as we were trying until the last minute to avoid this outcome. We do not take these delays lightly. This is not a matter of choice, but of survival. If Boundless is unable to operate and goes into liquidation, then no further payments at all—historic or current—will be possible; all existing cash will go to the liquidator, and all future sources of cash will be turned off, and all of your patience, the investors’ new capital, and all of senior management’s uncompensated time will have been for naught. John Mitchinson, Boundless Publishing Group’s Publisher, has resigned from the Board and will step down. He will not be drawing any funds from the company. As some of you may know, the company I founded, Neem Tree Press, was acquired by Unbound at the end of September 2024. I did not receive any cash for the sale. In fact, I put in a significant amount of new cash into Unbound at the time of the acquisition. I was appointed CEO of the new Boundless Publishing Group in March this year with the aim of stabilising the company. This is not an easy task when dealing with still existing historical issues. We have moved away from the old Unbound operational model, that did not work, to a more traditional publishing model; we are putting together a more efficient team; we are forming new boards of directors and advisors; and I am engaged in an additional round of fundraising. In fact, the only way that we could make even the first set of payments under the payment plan was because our current investors were willing to fund the newly formed company. I cannot emphasise enough that we can pay you the goodwill payments covering Unbound’s historic liabilities only if Boundless Publishing Group survives and thrives. The first step on this path was to bring in new investors, including Ronjon Nag, who has joined the Board. Ronjon is an inventor, teacher, entrepreneur and turnaround expert. He is an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University teaching AI, Genetics, Ethics, Longevity Science and Venture Capital. Boundless is also forming an Advisory Board consisting of publishing industry veterans and other turnaround experts to advise us through this time. I will continue to not take a salary from the company until it is on a solid footing, nor will Ronjon or any new director be taking remuneration—all so as to preserve the company’s cash position and ensure the best possible future for the company and to make voluntary goodwill payments over time. In the meantime, I ask for your patience with our staff who are not responsible for this situation. Unfortunately, I can’t answer immediately when you are likely to be paid, but if you should have other questions or concerns, please do respond to this email and I or my colleagues will do our best to get back to you.

So, I think it's time I begin, in detailed specifics, talking about the mess that is Unbound / Boundless as a book publisher, in essence stealing most of a years royalties from me and many other authors, as a result of poor financial decisions, and legal BS.

I discovered yesterday, in a mass email sent at 3am, that I will not be receiving the roughly £40,000 that my publisher Unbound/Boundless owes me for pre-order sales of The Paradox Paradox. The payment for five years of work, gone.

Yeah, OpenAI is washed. They want to make it so that OpenAI picks which model to use for you. Also GPT5 being "a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3" sounds like OpenAI doesn't actually have a model called GPT-5, just a rat king of different mediocre products. Welp!

After that, a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks. In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model. The free tier of ChatGPT will get unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting (!!), subject to abuse thresholds. Plus subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence, and Pro subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at an even higher level of intelligence. These models will incorporate voice, canvas, search, deep research, and more.

I think a bit of the "AI is democratizing art" argument is trying to avoid the ugly truth that to get good at anything you have to do a lot of it. I grew up "knowing" I was a good writer, but I really wasn't until about 700k words, and it took reading hours of scripts to really have a voice
