🆕 Four key parts of the Earth’s climate system are destabilising. Researchers analysed the interconnections of #Greenland ice sheet, #AMOC, #Amazon rainforest and the South American monsoon system. All four show signs of diminished resilience: www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/late... @climtip.bsky.social

Simulations covering 800,000 years show that a slight deep-ocean warming can trigger West #Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse, raising sea level by about 4 metres.

Today’s temperatures are already at this threshold. Future irreversible ice sheet loss may occur with little/no further climate warming.
Antarctic Ice Sheet tipping in the last 800,000 years warns of future ice loss - Communications Earth & Environment
The Antarctic Ice Sheet exhibits hysteresis and irreversible ice loss, with West Antarctic collapse contributing over 4 m of sea-level rise even under minimal additional warming, according to 800,000-...

“The German Meteorological & Physical Societies warn: "There is already a risk of warming by 3 degrees Celsius by 2050."
Some media are interpreting this as climate researchers contradicting each other. But the IPCC already warned of up to 3C for moderate emissions and up to 3.4C for high emissions.

China, the world’s largest carbon polluter, announced at the UN on Wednesday that it intended to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 7% by 2035. It was the first time Beijing has made such a strong commitment to halt global warming. Follow live updates from the UN General Assembly.
UN General Assembly: Live News and Updates
President Xi Jinping told a U.N. climate conference that his country would seek to reduce emissions by at least 7 to 10 percent by 2035. Ukraine’s president appealed for more weapons to fight Russia and warned of the dangers of a new arms race.

„Every further bit of warming we can avoid, even if it’s above 1.5 degrees, will help avoid or a least limit escalating damages (…)
“And the less we allow global warming to climb further, the greater the options we have to bring global warming back down to 1.5 degrees again.”

We can’t begin to make a dent in our carbon footprint if we don’t know which of our actions are having the most impact. Unfortunately, according to a study published in @pnas.org, a lot of people are massively misjudging the climate impacts of their actions.
