The ADL of today seems to have three interests: keeping their right wing mega-donors happy, protecting the current Israeli government’s violent far-right agenda by conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism, and cozying up to Trump to stay close to power.

At this moment in history, when everything hangs in the balance, we must choose the side of life, freedom, and solidarity. The only true safety is shared safety.

Ahmed al Ahmed, a Muslim immigrant from Syria, blessed the world with a shining example of this vision when he risked his own life, and sustained injuries, to protect Hanukkah revelers under gunfire. We are filled with awe and gratitude at his courage and compassion.

We owe it not just to the victims of this attack, but to all victims of all antisemitic attacks, to find within ourselves the courage, the integrity, and the love necessary to reject that path. The Jewish future demands that we build our safety instead on a foundation of solidarity and partnership.

But this attack was yet another gut-wrenching reminder that generations of investment in these approaches have failed to make us safe.

Already, Benjamin Netanyahu and other demagogues are seeking to exploit these 15 deaths, and our fear and heartbreak, for their own agendas, by offering us an empty promise of Jewish safety through walls, weapons, and repression.

Yet again, with fear in our hearts, we are forced to ask: How are we to find safety?
