If this ceasefire holds, it must mark the beginning of a new path — one where US policy shifts from fueling apartheid and genocide to supporting freedom and safety for all, starting with HR 3565, the Block the Bombs Act.

We must not let this genocide resume or anything like it happen again.

And even as the machines of death fall silent in Gaza, we cannot turn away from the West Bank, where brutal settler violence and ethnic cleansing continue daily, with US weapons and funding.

Rebuilding Gaza, rushing aid to those who will continue to starve in the days ahead, and restoring the dignity of its people is a moral imperative.

Tens, likely hundreds, of thousands of Palestinians have been massacred by the Israeli military. Entire family lines obliterated, each life an entire universe destroyed. Every life-sustaining system — healthcare, education, housing, and infrastructure — has been systematically annihilated.

In Gaza, the world must now reckon with the devastation left behind by two years of genocide – fueled by US weapons and supported for far too long by leaders of US Jewish communities.

That requires a real political process, led by Palestinians and Israelis, that dismantles Israel’s system of apartheid and occupation, and invests in a shared future rooted in justice and self-determination.

But a ceasefire, while urgently needed, is only a first step.

True safety will come only when there is freedom and equality for all who live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea — Palestinians and Israelis alike.

Likewise, the return of people long held captive is something families and communities have been desperately awaiting. Their reunions will be moments of profound joy amidst so much grief.

Every life is a universe. Any deal that stops the bombs from falling and saves lives is cause for relief and celebration.

Just another piece of evidence that the US's unilateral support of Israel no matter what crimes against humanity it commits has nothing to do with protecting Jews.

NEW: David Adler—a Jewish American on the Gaza aid Flotilla—details Israeli detention.

At one point, he says, he was forced to his knees for a photo op with the Israeli flag, as Ben Gvir yelled in his face, calling him a terrorist.

Says US "hung up" on families of Americans, veterans seeking help.

And may we, as our communities gather in sukkot everywhere, commit to a world in which all people may take comfort in the protection of sukkat shlomecha – the eternal shelter of holy peace. May it be so.

May we have the courage to mourn deeply, to see clearly, and to choose differently. May our grief call us to action.
ifnotnowmovement.org
Because we know this to be true:

Jews, whether they live between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, or anywhere else in the world, cannot be safe if Palestinians are not safe and free.
ifnotnowmovement.org
We grieve all who have been killed. We cry out for all who remain trapped in systems of violence and fear. And we commit to one another: to building a future in which no community's safety comes at the expense of another's freedom.
ifnotnowmovement.org
Our hearts are big enough, and our tears abundant enough, to grieve for every life lost, every universe destroyed, and every human being captured on October 7, 2023, and in the devastating two years that have followed.
ifnotnowmovement.org
We can still say “Not another bomb.” We can demand an end to our own government’s complicity, the transfers of weapons and funding that sustain this machinery of death. We can insist that our grief not be used to justify more violence, that it instead fuels our commitment to stop it.
ifnotnowmovement.org
A future rooted in freedom, democracy, and equal rights for all, for every Israeli and Palestinian, from the river to the sea. A future free from the decades-long status quo of occupation and apartheid.
ifnotnowmovement.org
We can still commit ourselves to building a future where another October 7 is unthinkable, not because of walls or bombs, but because we have finally built a foundation of justice.
ifnotnowmovement.org
It didn’t have to be this way. It still doesn’t. The conditions that led to October 7 were not inevitable, and the path we take from here is still ours to choose.
ifnotnowmovement.org
This is a stain on all of us. It is a grave desecration of the very lives lost on October 7. This is no way to honor the dead. It is a betrayal of their memory and of our shared humanity.
ifnotnowmovement.org
The conditions are catastrophic: tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of Palestinian lives taken, families erased, survivors concentrated in camps, mass starvation inflicted, homes reduced to rubble, the systems that sustain life, education, healthcare, water, & shelter, systematically annihilated.
ifnotnowmovement.org
We grieve, with bitter pain, that the memory of those lives continues to be used not to heal, but to harm – weaponized to justify the Israeli military’s genocidal campaign against Palestinians in Gaza and beyond.
ifnotnowmovement.org
The pain of that day echoes still, as survivors carry trauma, and families continue to live with the absence of loved ones and long for those still held in captivity. May the memories of those killed on October 7 be a blessing.
ifnotnowmovement.org
We grieve for the over 1,100 Israelis killed in the Hamas-led attack two years ago. We hold in our hearts the sacredness of each life lost, each person a world unto themselves, each death an entire universe destroyed.
