Give that in Greek “stupid” is Ηλίθιος (elethios - ish) maybe for some "governments" we could mention, it might be useful to call them an "elethiocracy". It's not a word I can find in a dictionary, more’s the pity, but I kind of like it.

Luckily when terrestrial television dies, we’ll be able to be completely dependent on disruptor billionaires who can’t budget properly and think all media is free and are probably going to go bust at the same time because it’s still just unproven spec tech, so that’ll be good.

(and I've veered around disciplines. Originally physics, through arts and media and its teaching. Now I'm a software engineer. Knowing "stuff" can be useful, and defends against other dangers, like the cognitive debt of farming thinking out to tech that can't actually think)

I go back to Hector in The History Boys, throwing all sorts of odd stuff at his charges. There should be room for that in the curriculum. General Studies, Things & Stuff : diving into the random sea of "stuff" that joins up in interesting ways, without having to think about the subject specific.

This is a huge moment in linear broadcast TV. When I began my TV career in 2005, even history documentaries were expected to get 2 million viewers

Last month, something unusual happened in TV - none of the main channels got a million viewers at 9pm. The bigger problem was it happened a 2nd & 3rd time soon after.

Another unwelcome landmark for linear TV & our shrinking shared TV experience.

Does it matter?

UK broadcasters used to rely on big audiences at 9pm, but as viewing habits change, figures are falling below the 1m mark

The irony in that is *almost* beautiful isn't it?

Almost. It's tragic really.

I suppose we will see inevitable IT launch issues, even though one presumes it has been through significant integration tests and UAT. Actual deployment is always challenging.

But hey, we're a third country, and don't get to make the decisions now. So there we are.

Australian artist Roy Ananda has created a collage of diagrams that he calls The Apparitionist. I expressed my concern that he was dabbling with occult forces, but the exhibition has gone ahead. My letter of warning is in the foyer, though. Pics: Sam Roberts.

Nice Schnozzle Durante callback with the trombone line there too ...

Yeah, I liked the fact that he went for the ... um .. most "radio friendly" one there, shall we say? 😁

I vaguely remember them appearing on TV with Mike Harding back in the late 70s early 80s, and have heard some of their stuff before

Yeah, the data export stuff is problematic

Yes. There are strategic concerns in all sorts of places about reliance on US owned platforms.
illuminatus.bsky.social
It’s … more complicated. The WMF is based on California, but the infrastructure and governance is devolved to some extent, partly to mitigate against this kind of stuff.

Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in 51 BC and died in 44 BC, therefore all of Asterix's adventures took place over the course of less than seven years, probably much less since Asterix's chieftain was at the battle of Alesia, were it is probable Asterix and Obelix's fathers died. In this essay, I will

Modest proposal:

BBC BRING BACK 'TOMORROW'S WORLD'.

Science, tech, environment reporting are woeful currently. Something that blasts excitement about what a golden age we're in of discovery (vaccines, computing, space exploration etc etc) but can also be a trojan horse for warnings on climate etc
