Russia prefers prolonged war, since it believes that time is working in its favour.
It makes sense: the longer the war continues, the more Russia learns and adapts, and the more likely it is that its constant probing to test Western unity and resolve will deliver results.

One of the major issues, that has not come to full attention in "The West": Russia already *IS* waging open war against the very core of our free and democratic societies. Our opinion space is under full attack by their hybrid warfare. Their influence on opinions and elections is open war.
This encourages Russia it to ramp up its hybrid war against the West, because the benefits are potentially high, and the risks apparently low. And as long as Russia believes this to be the case, it will continue what it is doing.

Finally i want to stress that Russia has to loose this war. If it gets away with any successes it will resume on it´s project to reassert it´s dominance over it´s former subjects and vassals. It also would reassure other actors to behave likewise. 8/
