Unidentified drone flies over NATO’s Geilenkirchen air base in Germany, prompting security alert #Ukraine
Unidentified drone flies over NATO’s Geilenkirchen air base in Germany, prompting security alert
Germany has recorded another incident at a NATO military site. On the evening of October 8, an unidentified drone was spotted over the air base in the city of Geilenkirchen, Spiegel reports . This is where NATO’s airborne surveillance aircraft are based, playing a key role in monitoring the Alliance’s eastern flank and maintaining real-time awareness near Ukraine. According to an internal service memo, the drone entered a strictly prohibited flight zone after 7 p.m. It remained in the air for about a minute and flew at low altitude directly over the runway. Despite the brief nature of the incident, the drone’s appearance in a high-security zone raised serious concern. Military police immediately notified civilian law enforcement, but the launch point and operator could not be identified. In response, base commanders ordered “enhanced security measures.” The facility’s grounds were thoroughly checked, but no traces of the drone were found. Boeing E-3 Sentry (AWACS) aircraft are stationed here to monitor airspace along the Alliance’s borders, including over the Black Sea. These aircraft help NATO track Russian military activity in real time, intercept signals, and warn partners of threats. The Geilenkirchen installation is among the most heavily guarded bases in the Bundeswehr. Its security has been reinforced since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, so the appearance of an unidentified UAV here is being viewed as a reconnaissance or provocative operation that may involve Moscow. The incident comes amid rising tensions between Russia and NATO countries and follows a series of similar episodes. A drone appearing over a strategic site may indicate attempts by Russian intelligence to conduct surveillance or probe the Alliance’s security for vulnerabilities.
