People must grasp the idea of “media capture.”
It’s when authoritarian regimes and/or their powerful allies take control of media to stifle independent voices holding the government to account.
It’s one way Hungary’s Viktor Orbán keeps power.
In the U.S., it’s what the Ellisons have done with CBS.

Notice the pattern: help a narrow group loudly, hurt everyone else quietly. Tariffs help a few steel workers but raise prices for every firm using steel. Tax cuts favor the rich while squeezing social programs. Politically noisy wins, economically costly losses.

Gravity is a very cheap mobile (+other) gaming company. The board sadly is bad. But the business itself is very good and is piling up huge cash balances (which should be used for buybacks and dividends).

Tariffs are like throwing rocks in the economic engine, then asking the Fed to fix the noise by adjusting the radio volume. Interest rates can tune demand, but they can’t magically make a trade war painless.

Initial look at $se earnings look very good again. I am a long term holder and am happy to keep holding. It is my 3rd largest holding 6% of portfolio. It tends to do very poorly the day earnings are announced (this has been true for years).

I am very skeptical of the reports that $googl will provide gemini AI to $appl for $1 billion a year. Google pays Apple something like $20 billion a year for searches via iphones...

If that $1 billion figure is close I think there must be some sharing of additional AI services revenue from users.

Whoever could have imagined there would be negative downstream consequences professionally for making a corrupt deal with the Trump admin….
Wow. "Months after law firms made deals with President Trump to ward off punitive executive orders, the ethics committee of the District of Columbia Bar is warning that such arrangements may require firms to drop or obtain waivers from all clients who have interests at odds with the government."

The destruction of long term economic value in the USA through the foolish and corrupt actions taken by Republicans this year is enormous. They continue to seek to hide their corruption from public view. The damage to the USA is going to last for decades-more deaths, transfers of wealth to the 1%...
This is a story that got missed, about how the White House is using the shutdown as an excuse to eliminate accountability.

It has shut down Inspectors General websites, meaning that lots of reports about failures have disappeared from govt websites.

The United States is no longer negotiating with Canada because the America's Republican President does not understand his predecessor's view of tariffs.

Forget the clip that worries the President. Reagan was consistent, and here's a different speech where he made his case.

Tariffs Quiet Tax On Households
Tariff collections are up 1% of GDP and US households are footing most of the bill. With labor markets softening, the stealth tax hike is squeezing household spending at an already challenging time.

In this blackout period we have to look to other data sources to keep track of the economy.

Notable in that context that the Chase Consumer Card spending data for September was the weakest in years, sharply decelerating from the strength this summer.

The tariff story isn’t just soybeans. It’s also your grocery bill. Farmers get a bailout. Shoppers just get higher prices. Trade wars don't just create pain, they ensure the costs are born by those without political power.

Lemme try to reconcile a strong stock market with a weak economy.

The market represents the big incumbents with a line to the White House. As policy tilts toward crony capitalism, they're offered a carveout-for-compliments deal. Main Street gets no such deal.

Result—Weak economy yet strong stonks

At this point if USA TV news does not have a banner on the screen saying they are actually a news organization that corrects lies + falsehoods it seems reasonable to assume they just act as a propaganda machine for the current administration's attacks on the constitution, rule of law, free press...
Let’s remember: What CBS cut were vicious unproven slander and uncharged allegations by a Cabinet secretary targeting a private person. If we can’t draw the line against such hideous lies, is there no line left?
CBS News is giving up the power it has to hold “Face the Nation” interviewees to account. Following pressure from Trump, it has agreed not to edit interviews, even to remove false statements or propaganda uttered by political operatives and officials, or add explanatory context.

In addition to the clear unconstitutional and illegal actions on a daily basis there have been thousands of actions (like this one, destroying the USA's advantage of good economic data to allow businesses and sensible political leaders make decisions) that are incredibly damaging added together.
USDA quietly said Friday it will, after a century, end the Farm Labor Survey (FLS), the only wage survey of ag employers.

FLS is a critical input to setting local minimum wages for H-2A visa workers to try to avoid harm to U.S. workers' wages.

Question: Why did US put big tariffs on India despite major national interest in cultivating a strategic counterweight to China and trying to isolate Russia?

Answer: Because the US president lied that he fixed India-Pakistan and India wouldn’t go along with the lie.

(Seriously, that’s the answer)
