It's of academic interest - yes - but more than that, if a clinical lab can't figure out it has a string of E. hormaechei, it might not know that an outbreak is in play, placing patients at harm. Big shout out to Faith Oni who
worked really hard on this for several years &../4

Took us a while to get the analysis right bcos we don't (yet) have "Enterobacterate" or even good biochemical ID matrices. Our most common spp. (& most other HAIs) is Ent. hormaechei. Never heard of it? Maybe you need to step up your ID schemes...maybe we all need WGS./3

There are common priority pathogens that we all work to culture, sequence & characterize; with user-friendly tools & big databases. Y'know, E. coli, Klebsiellae, MRSA &c. But what about lesser-known (also) priority pathogens? Thread pointing to our newest

Umm…not Greece, Portugal, South Africa- all places where talented Nigerian students who’ve garnered abstract acceptances & competitive bursaries are denied visas for no clear reason, after we have registered, made travel expenses etc. consider Nigeria, Ghana,Kenya as we have no trouble getting there

My grad student experience investigating a cholera outbreak is 1 reason why our research focuses on life-threatening infections. More recently, Alisha Wainwright & I discussed cholera in Africa today. Listen to us @Wellcome ‘When Science Finds a Way’. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ct3P...

If your lab runs the #BioFire GI Pathogen Panel do you report all the diarrheagenic Escherichia coli targets? If you report Enteroaggregative E. coli #EAEC,
Enteropathogenic E. coli #EPEC, or Enteroinvasive E. coli #EIEC do you include a comment or disclaimer to guide treatment vs not treating?

📣Our latest paper is out now in mSystems: Not quite as it may seem - investigating #plasmid diversity and evolution in #Klebsiella pneumoniae at a single institution over time. A short thread 🧵 @zaminiqbal.bsky.social
Composite of the paper header showing all authors and an equation showing phylogenetic trees plus plasmids give a complex plasmid picture.
