I shared this with some friends who I thought would be easy converts. It rapidly descended into a conversation about what other kind of preserves would be acceptable offerings. And this is how schisms develop.
I think at this point the UK has accepted Paddington as the Death Bear, collector of souls. So, I think as a nation we should start smearing marmalade on the eyes of the dead and whisper “fare for the crossing”. It’ll feel weird now but, in three of four generations, no one will question it.

Earlier this year I bought a camera trap so I could figure out where foxes were getting into the garden. 8yo son, sceptical of Father Christmas, has borrowed it for tonight.

So...obviously I've now bought a Santa outfit. Your move, boy.

It could just be the fact it’s been a VERY long year, but this is just the loveliest thing: www.npr.org/2014/12/19/3...
NORAD's Santa Tracker began with a typo and a good sport
It all started in 1955 with a misprint in a Colorado newspaper and a call to Col. Harry Shoup's secret military hotline. Shoup played along with the tiny voice who called, and a tradition was born.

Obviously I’m annoyed that my cab home is taking ages (it’s a Wednesday! It’s half eleven! The streets should be empty!) but I am also annoyed that the pavements of central London are half empty (it’s the first week of Christmas party season: where is everyone?).

Offering a smoked mackerel, pickled red onion and beetroot sandwich in an office canteen is an act of war.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked,

"If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?"

Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Not to sound like luke akehurst or something but if you genuinely think woke ideology has done more to defund the military than a government with the ethos of a child with a pair of scissors...fundamentally unserious

Nothing like looking after your own children for three and a half days to make you long for the office. Maternity leave schmaternity leave.

@biggreenbooks.bsky.social morning Simon! Looking for a couple of traditional/typically British children’s books to send to a friend’s 8 month old in DC for Christmas. Any suggestions? Thinking maybe a Julia Donaldson (not the Gruffalo though) and one other? Ta!
