“My strength returns to me with my cup of coffee and reading the psalms.”

— Dorothy Day
Drawing by artist Ben Wildflower, of Dorothy Day holding a lit cigarette in one hand. Her elbow is on the table, the hand holding the cigarette near her head. A coffee mug resting on the table in the other hand, fingers gripping the handle.

Christians! We know what is right! We know that every person violently torn from their families, from their homes, from their workplaces, they are all Jesus. What we do to these we do to him, what we don't do for these we don't do for him!

Will you bow in fear to the tyrants working for hell? ⚓️

Come from the four winds, O Spirit, come, breath of God; disperse the shadows over us, renew and strengthen your people. Veni, Sancte Spiritus.

It’s still wild to me I was raised singing “Jesus loves the little children / all the children in the world / red yellow black and white / they are precious in His sight” and my right wing family wonder how I became a social justice Christian against the empire.

Because I actually believed it?

He does, because God’s victory over Satan’s power over death was in His death, and in our dying in Christ we claim that victory. 🤓 We’re resurrection people. To get there, we gotta die. Buried in the waters of baptism, dying to our sin, and living anew in Christ Jesus. 🙌🏼

By the way I appreciate the (always) civil discourse between our different understandings, that do indeed wind up in the same place, we just arrive to them quite differently. 😁🤓

Condolences for your friend, rest eternal. I’ll stick with St. Paul, and St. Francis in welcoming death, because our God defeated Satan’s power over it, and it means I get to be with our Beloved… that is a tiding of comfort and joy… it’s almost like a song we sing. 🎶 God bless, Daniel. TTYL 🫶🏼

St. Paul himself says "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” — death for a Christian is a benefit.

Have you never been to a Christian funeral? Sorry to be so blunt. We don’t bewail and curse death. In His death He defeated Satan’s power over death. It is in our dying we are given internal life through His death, and resurrection. God defeated our fear of death 2,000 years ago.

God defeated eternal death. That’s the whole point. We believe in a bodily resurrection, it is in the promise He made to us. That’s why we welcome the physical death as something tied to our nature, the souls unity with God in our physical death, the resurrection of the body, & life everlasting. 🫶🏼

The primacy of Christ and the first principle of creation being love is the crux of the story. God created us to love us and for us to freely choose to love Him back. God did not come among us because of something we did, but because God loved His creation so immeasurably He wanted to be with us.

One thing particularly misunderstood and looked over in Franciscan thought is our view of sin. Many tend to think God came among us only because we had sinned and needed saving from it. Franciscans reject that notion. Christ was always there, and God always planned to come among us to love us.

"I, Brother Francis, little one, want to follow the life and poverty of the Most High, our Lord Jesus Christ, and of his Most Holy Mother, and to persevere in this to the end." #SaintFrancisOfAssisi

Franciscans reject the notion that our sin was the only reason Christ came among us. Christians welcoming death to be with Christ eternally is biblical. Equating spiritual death with eternal death in this context is an error.

1. Physical death and spiritual death are distinct in scripture, and physical death is not the same. 2. Franciscans don’t believe that Christ came because of sin, but that God created creation to be with us in physical form through Christ who is coequal and coeternal with the Father. 1/2

It was nothing about domestic pets in comparison. Like all prophets we deride and outcast them, then when they die we sanitize and make palatable their messages by making them sugar plumbs and rainbows and not the radical truth of the literal gospel that came for the poor, the captive, and outcast.

I think you’re misunderstanding the death St. Francis is referring to as sister. Death, the spiritual separation from the body, is inevitably tied to all of us in the nature of how God created us. It is welcome, because we who die in Christ will rest in the Lord and rise again. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 🫶🏼

That’s reassuring in some ways. Hopefully they see how crippling debt can be. I thought I’d own a house and be set by 30 and here I am fourt… anyway… and I still rent and am convinced I’ll never own a home unless it’s on wheels lol 😂

I feel like we got some of that “work ethic” from our parents and grandparents though… Gen Z people will be given a deadline and not finish the task because they put in 8 and leave… lol 😂

😏 I suppose I have carved out my own bubble and enjoy it here, and I’m not being affected by prudish moderation and I blocked Signal as soon as I saw he was on because everyone pounced on it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But a lot of people I follow say they’re considering leaving.
