I'm a sociologist and postdoctoral researcher at the European University Institute. I'm interested in job quality and segregation in labour market & other life domains. I also like dogs and funky music, but I don't do research about that (yet)

Once again, let's look at who leaves (and not just who enters) when thinking about labour market segregation 👇

Nearly 40% of professors come from families without university-educated parents.
But across cohorts, professors from low-SES families have become less common in more recent generations.

Totally agree with the diagnosis, not sure about the suggestion of the two track system. it might create weird selection and sorting.

we should change the reward and publication system.

(2) A close person is demanding their employer in Spain, with strong confidence form the layer and informed relatives.

However, person is very worried because they explosed the case to Chat GPT multiple times and Chat GPT says the employer is right

This is my own thread for weirdly absurd observed use of AI

(1) Last week at the airport, someone asked ChatGPT which conveyor belt their suitcase would come from. Told the father Chat GPT said # 8.

The baggage-claim screen, right behind their head, clearly said #1, right in front of us.

So, to be clear, my lack of knowledge is regarding the public calls with 20 page regulations, but little info about the job. I know in some Spanish university and departments this is done differently and info is much clearer

Not sure if I need a book, an online course, a master class or else to know how the system works.

Any resources you may know of are highly appreciated.

Anyway, I've been recently having a look at the Spanish academic job market and, besides reading navigating through several PDFs and links to find job offers, the compensation is generally not clear, the duties are (usually) nor clear, the contract duration is (usually) nor clear.

I have a friend in Spain with a PhD teaching 4 courses a week (8h in total) for ~500€/month gross. This happens in a university in one of the main cities in the country.

You're not crazy. Some people over do it. Just eat enough but not too much to avoid vomitting. This is so different between runners

"A move from the 10th to the 90th percentile in the distribution of manager fixed effects is associated with a 28% increase in workers’ wages"
ivancanzio.bsky.social
How much do managers contribute to wage inequality?

He and Le Maire use Danish (!) data and find that managers explain about 4% of the total variation in wages.

Very cool paper that was finally published this summer (working paper has been around for 3 years): doi.org/10.1162/rest...
Managing Inequality: Manager-Specific Wage Premiums and Selection in the Managerial Labor Market
Abstract. This paper uses a manager-firm-worker matched dataset covering the entire Danish population to identify manager effects on worker wages. We show that manager-specific wage premiums are almos...

Quite a useful feature to know what's going on behind our paper submissions.

The editor has been inviting new reviewers for about 3 consecutive weeks and only one reviewer has accepted the request 👌
