Großwärmepumpen are heating up Germany: capacity is expected to increase 6x by 2030.

Rivers and sea are increasingly being used as a heat source. The cost of heat pumps appears to be proportional to their size.

These and other findings from a new study:

The year starts with a new competition case re. public EV charging prices in Italy. The competition authority has decided to conduct a further investigation into A2A Mobility, as prices charged to others were higher than in their own app.

You would think that in the heartland of the German car industry, the transition from horses to motor cars would be well known. This is how the exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz Museum (one of Germany's many car temples) began:

The Netherlands sees food as economy, not culture, let alone high ‘cuisine’. But without an automatic ‘oliebol’ deep fry line, would it have had those high-tech ASML machines as an export gem?

“Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles did not prevail in becoming the dominant mode of transport through technical superiority alone. They were backed by massive public investment in roads, city planning, zoning and highway expansion funded by fuel taxes.

Not really in number of petrol stations:
1848 in 2018
1823 in 2023

One factor is that fuel has a very low margin, while other items (coffee, snacks) have a much higher margin – and that turnover remains the same or even increases with more EVs and petrol stations adding EV chargers, I guess.

This remains a thing of beauty to look at. What a difference within a year.

Norway is the undisputed leader when it comes to EVs in the vehicle fleet. Denmark is following closely behind, and at a rapid pace: the share of EVs in the vehicle fleet doubled in one year. Growth in the share is also continuing in Sweden and Finland.

Electrification = higher efficiency, therefore a smaller impact of 'Avoid and Shift'.
E-fuels improve fuels, but increase energy demand, so the additional effect of 'Avoid and Shift' is stronger.

At an undetermined point in the future, the Commission intends to establish requirements that align uni- + bidirectional charging capabilities with relevant grid codes and communication protocols, as is already required for charging infrastructure.

"Thanks to a series of relay stops (to swap electric tractors, drivers and trailers), each electric truck travels a daily distance of 810 km on the North loop and 704 km on the South loop. This system makes it possible to cover long distances without stopping the load."

In nearby Leipzig, two other early 21st-century car factories continue to produce: BMW and Porsche build here – and here too, they are architectural temples to the automobile, with the same idea of a transparent production line.

(Possible at several locations in Germany, such as Wolfsburg (VW) and Munich (BMW) - the emotional bond between Germans and their cars is clear)

Diesel cars are still mainly popular in Germany and Austria, but even then they account for only a quarter of new registrations. However, it still accounts for a significant proportion of sales by German car manufacturers (down from 75–80% at the peak).
