The use of the base ten system is brilliant, but it drives me to distraction that the base values were seemingly arbitrarily aligned. One liter isn't one cubic meter, it's 1/1000th of that, 1000 cubic centimeters. Just bugs me.

This almost works, except that you're working with a kcal instead of a cal. One of the base unit of volume, one of the base unit of temperature, 1000 of the base unit of energy. Similarly, the relationship between volume and mass. One gram (base unit) being one ml (1/1000th of base unit) of water.
