Aye! Was great having you.

I'm fully on board when it comes to diversity and inclusion. And I am of the belief that we have to be radical about these efforts (I don't see it happening otherwise). The games industry (and other creative industries), and societies in general.

And Generative AI? It's making this worse. It can only work from existing content, magnifying the biases and blind spots already baked into our industry.

Some examples I shared:
- The bizarre "blend in" mechanic in Assassin's Creed II, where hiring courtesans makes you invisible. Clearly, no women were in consideration while making that decision.
- Games like America's Army that dehumanizing my people. Arabs & Muslim reduced to targets.

We needed devs with access to cutting-edge tools (Not all people in the world have access to the newest tech to study), and this narrowed our perspective. A small slice of the world has been creating worlds meant to resonate with all leading to creative blind spots, and harmful stereotypes.

The industry we inherited, is one that does not reward novelty of ideas, the market does. The result is an industry that chased after tech advancement for profit. It created homogeneous teams.

For decades, we were spoiled by tech. The visual leap from Gran Turismo 2 to 4 was so stunning that the industry rewarded technical knowledge over creative exploration. Now that we've hit a tech plateau, we've been reskinning the same games since 2017. I call this "Idea Inbreeding."

I was just ranting to my bf that we get taught abstract concepts without practical use in school, generating zero interest in math, at least for me. How sad I am now that I didn't listen and how enthusiastic would I have been if we had used it for something like building a game in school!

Definitely resonates with me. I think the reason I became such a math geek is I was beginning to make my own games in secondary school — even in stuff as primitive as QBASIC — so I saw each new lesson through the lens of "what games does this enable me to make?" Parabolas? Ooh, tank game ballistics!

A highlight moment while talking to @joeyprink.bsky.social (Computer Science Professor). I had to reflect on how math is not taught the right way. We need more practical examples, now we have game engines that are free to teach math functions using examples.
