I don’t credit them with much but I do think they’re probably smart enough not to let that happen.

They’re absolutely insane. I logged into the other place and it’s full meltdowns about literally nothing

“Not everyone likes investing” is the whole problem (well, that people in the UK are extremely risk averse and for the most part don’t invest in equities is at least).

This ISA change won’t do much to change that of course, you can already bung £20k tax free into a sticks and shares ISA

I don’t think most people see their primary residence as their wealth to be fair and that’s understandable for some reasons but it results in this ludicrous outcome where a person in a £2m home is poor but someone with £100k in stocks isn’t

New Labour domestically fundamentally got it

- but these things happen. Property taxes based on value are just normal. There’s a pretty right wing argument to do stuff like cut stamp duty but charge a lot more property tax to encourage a liquid market .

I fully accept the emotional heft of losing The Family Home. I have so many memories tied up in my grandparents big place we went to every holiday. Gran definitely wanted to pass it down too but it got too big for her to manage as she got older -

It’s all disingenuous rubbish anyway. Even in posh Richmond £2m houses are fucking massive. This is all from children of pensioners who think their inheritance is about to take a hit

Fully accept the emotional heft of loving your family home! I still have bundles of memories tied up in my Gran’s place before she moved to a small bungalow when it got too big for her to manage

Even in the leafiest bits of Richmond, you could downsize to a gaffe that’s under £2m if this was a tax you desperately wanted to avoid and if you really were that penniless would free up a lot of capital to enjoy your life

I’m from one of the posher London suburbs (Bromley so not quite Richmond of course) - these stories are disingenuous bollocks from children who think their inheritance is about to take a hit
