The idea that the world cannot descend into tyranny and that we in the 21st century are somehow innured against it because all that stuff is in the past is very dangerous indeed. There is nothing exceptional about any era or time.

Those with some experience or knowledge of ADHD will see what I'm getting at here.

Tchaikovsky has long been shamed for his bugromania, and his music psychoanalysed from every other angle. But I'd love to see more people digging a bit deeper than the tired tortured homosexual argument and exploring

Later in life he was either described as the life of the party, or in contrast the hermit of Klin. Nobody seems quite able to pin him down.

Clue number... I forget where we're up to... was his ambiguous sense of gender. One of his letters is even signed as 'from your loving sister Petrolina'.

His party tricks were playing the piano with a towel over his hands and guessing the key of pieces he heard.

His lack of ability to regulate his emotions is well documented, not least by his own letters through the adult years.

He was obsessive to detail, particularly in the pursuit of lovers.

One night he was found crying because the music in his head just wouldn't stop, and another time he was tapping his fingers so hard on the window, presumably to the music in his head, that the glass broke and he cut himself.

His musical prowess was quite remarkable even as a child too

As a child P.T was highly sensitive - 'a child of glass'. He was, by his governesses account, a good boy who 'shone through something uncommon... inexplicably enchanted everyone' and yet 'distinguished by his untidiness, shock headed, carelessly dressed [and] grubby from some unthinking act'...
