9. Be willing to be wrong.
No one gets it perfect. Language and situations evolve and change. So listen to people who raise issues and don’t jump to be defensive or be so scared of making a mistake that you don’t use your voice.
Speak, but listen too.

5. Risk assess
What should event staff do or say if someone is upset or discloses something about themselves? Ensure the team have talked through and planned for these situations.

4. Assume lived experience
Work on the assumption that someone in your audience has lived/living experience of a topic and speak to the room in the way you would talk to that person.

3. Options
Don’t say “the next speaker will talk about xxxx, please welcome them to the stage”. Say “after the next break we will be discussing xxxx, if anyone would rather not participate we have an alternate space/talk for you”
Give a real chance to opt out.

2. Advance warning
Make it clear what will be discussed during the session, highlighting areas which might be challenging in adverts and advance materials.
