John Hancock, 1774: “Some boast of being friends to government; I am a friend to righteous government, to a government founded upon the principles of reason and justice; but I glory in publicly avowing my eternal enmity to tyranny.”

The fire really made the point: you want serious people in government because the stakes of public policy are real.

I did my three-mile loop around the neighborhood today for the first time since the fire a year ago. It’s still heartbreaking to see the damage in #Altadena.

Up to 9” since the 24th. I’m going to run out of space in my rain bucket? It’s been coming down hard. #Altadena, 1/2.

Very dramatic sky for Christmas, though, and less flooding than you might expect, at least where I am.

A little over 7” in the rain bucket — #Altadena, #LosAngeles.

So glad the Getty Villa survived the fire. It’s one of the coolest places in #LosAngeles.

Los Angeles is a beautiful place, but I struggle to find the right words to describe it. It’s dusty and gritty but then there are the blue skies and the fancy people. In any case, home.

The idea (from that NYT article) that schools can’t have students read books because books are too expensive is just… wow. Here is the top-25 authors of downloaded free books on project Gutenberg. All free. There are some good writers on this list… yes, older, but also, yes, free, and good!

Just finished teaching my regular classes for 2025-2026. Next up: the politics seminar where we build a political simulation. It’ll be an adventure!

And I also like taking photographs for #bloomscrolling.

We should be fighting for Australia instead of thinking about an attack on Venezuela. That’s still worth 2 extra armies but there is only one entry-point.
