This is the first Thanksgiving for Sophie & Colin Hortman without their parents, Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman who were assassinated along with the family dog in an act of political murder. National guards troops were not deployed to the state in response.

Luckily, Sinclair has a helpful database of all their stations, so you can see if they're operating in your area and respond accordingly.

As an epic fantasy writer who's studied military history in different periods for decades, I bin books for errors in strategy and tactics too often. I absolutely recommend this concise and straight-forward handbook for any author unsure of their footing. Your book will improve in all sorts of ways.
Stressed out by your battle scene? HOW TO WRITE A FANTASY BATTLE is out in the world - and since a few reviewers who pride themselves on the depth of their military knowledge have complained that the book is too short and basic, you know it'll be absolutely perfect for YOU 😇

For the first time since she was freed from an immigration prison, Rümeysa Öztürk speaks. And she does so by ... writing:

"Writing is the heart of freedom of expression. Unbelievably, this single opinion piece, published in our student newspaper, would lead to my arrest and detention."
“Even God Cannot Hear Us Here”: What I Witnessed Inside an ICE Women’s Prison
Tufts University doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk opens up about her 45 days in a South Louisiana processing facility—and the generous and compassionate women she met.

Really interesting article on queering the Medieval
I am an accidental medievalist—snared by the Early Medieval through story not scholarship. Now I'm using fiction informed by scholarship to try change public notions of the Early Medieval. Here's an interesting open-access journal article assessing one aspect of my impact.

We talk a lot about the closing down of reviewing space, of cultural news -- Locus is doing it and deserves to keep doing it. Not only does Locus review a wide range of writers but it develops longterm conversations about those writers, reviewers who know their work. A small thing that struck me +

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?
