Sweet! Thanks. Probably won't get them in time for Christmas, but I think these will be perfect for both kids to take and use in the UK over the summer.

I'm guessing bad FAT on the drive. Assuming the drive is not physically damaged, possibly recoverable. I'd start with an FDISK /mbr.
