RILEY GREENE!!!

454 ft

The second-longest home run of his career (regular season + playoffs)
jasonbeck.bsky.social
They are no longer booing Riley Greene. Lefty-lefty home run thru the shadows gives Tigers their first lead since Game 1.

Initial reading from Statcast: 454 feet

Troy Melton on for sixth inning in a 3-3 game, bottom half of Mariners order due up. Gotta figure they try to get a few innings out of him if he's on.

2022-24 Javy Baez probably swings big again and strkes out after just missing a go-ahead home run. 2025 postseason Javy Baez takes a game-tying single thru the middle.

Dingler Double doesn't have the same ring to it, but it gets the Tigers on the board, chases Bryce Miller and starts the chess match in earnest. 3-1 M's in 5th.

The boos for Riley Greene (and the offense in general) are getting loud.

Troy Melton warming in Tigers bullpen as Cal Raleigh's RBI single expands Mariners lead to 3-0 in 5th.
jasonbeck.bsky.social
Tigers used two of their most trusted relievers to get thru fourth inning with a run allowed. At some point, somebody (Melton?) will have to provide at least a little bit of length.

Also, Tigers need runs, down 2-0.

Kyle Finnegan warming in Tigers bullpen as Mariners put first two batters on against Tyler Holton.
jasonbeck.bsky.social
Tyler Holton on to face Josh Naylor leading off 4th inning.

Casey Mize:
3 IP, 2 H, R, 2 BB, 6 K
54 pitches, 36 strikes
21 splitters, 5 whiffs out of 12 swings, but also the RBI single from Canzone

Tyler Holton has started warming in Tigers bullpen as Casey Mize walks Cal Raleigh with one out in third. Gotta figure he gets Josh Naylor if innings gets that far.

As the topic of pitch-tipping really starts to ramp up, Josh Naylor may have been giving a hint to Dominic Canzone about the upcoming pitch right before Canzone singled him home
jasonbeck.bsky.social
Casey Mize threw 7 splitters in a 17-pitch opening inning. It's a pitch he threw 24.2 percent of the time in the regular season, and just 15 of 69 pitches vs. Seattle in July, but 25.9 percent for September, and 20 of his 62 pitches vs. Guardians last week.

Tigers brought the legends for their two home games this series. A day after Miguel Cabrera's ceremonial first pitch, Lou Whitaker threw the ceremonial first pitch today.

Have seen Jesse Winker and Dee Gordon Mariners jerseys at Comerica Park the last couple days. The M's representation is strong.

Dingler: "I advise pitchers to please get off the mound, because I've hit two now. One was Shelby [Miller] last year on a rehab assignment, and that one didn't feel too good.

"I have to work downhill in order to get my best throws off, so sometimes, you know, they don't make it over their head."
jasonbeck.bsky.social
Dillon Dingler buzzed the tower on Tarik Skubal on his throw to second. Skubal noted early this season how pitchers have to duck on Dingler's throws, which tend to come in low. He has jokingly told Dingler, who hit Shelby Miller in the back last year in Toledo, not to hit him. That one was close.

Today is the last day of the year with four Major League Baseball games -- and all four are potential clinchers. The schedule:

Seattle (up 2-1) at Detroit, 3:08p ET

Milwaukee (2-0) at Chicago, 5:08p

Toronto (2-1) at New York, 7:08p

Philadelphia at Los Angeles (2-0), 9:08p

Dingler: "I blame myself. Obviously it can't go past me in that situation. That's all there is to that. I have go get down whatever way and make sure that stays in front of me, or just glove it."

Red Wings season doesn't start for another couple days, but that's an uncharacteristic error thru the five hole for Dillon Dingler, even though it's officially a throwing error on Riley Greene. Mariners' big inning is on.
jasonbeck.bsky.social
Dan Wilson went to lefty Caleb Ferguson for 9th with 8-1 lead, and A.J. Hinch pounced:

Jake Rogers PH single
Jahmai Jones PH walk
Tork 2-run double
Ibáñez RBI single

Enter M's closer Andrés Muñoz with 8-4 M's lead. Even if comeback falls short, Tigers forced M's to use Muñoz 3 times in 4 days.

Kerry Carpenter had played very good defense in right field this series to help make Colt Keith's return at DH work. But that error makes a rough night for the Tigers worse.
jasonbeck.bsky.social
The 19th at-bat produces Tigers' first run, but on a fielder's choice. Carpenter busted it to 1B at 28.4 ft/sec to beat the double play as Josh Naylor bobbled the rushed throw, scoring Dillon Dingler. But Tigers needed a bigger inning there, still down 4-1.
jasonbeck.bsky.social
The 19th at-bat goes to Kerry Carpenter against Logan Gilbert with runners at the corners and one out in fifth inning of a 4-0 game.
jasonbeck.bsky.social
Kerry Carpenter bats leadoff for Tigers in G3, with Colt Keith moving up to third, as A.J. Hinch tries to push the decision point with Dan Wilson on Logan Gilbert.

"Carp at the top gives him the best chance to create that stress in the 19th at-bat. Maybe it happens before, maybe it happens after."
