I support moving toward universal programs — Medicare for All for healthcare, universal free school meals, and a permanent expanded Child Tax Credit — that reach everyone without the stigma and bureaucracy of means-testing.

Means-testing creates benefit cliffs where earning an extra dollar can cost families thousands in lost benefits, effectively punishing work and trapping people in poverty.

The most fundamental gap is that our safety net remains fragmented and means-tested rather than universal. Families must navigate a maze of separate programs, each with its own eligibility rules, applications, and bureaucratic hurdles.
