Husband, father, nerd, secular humanist, democratic socialist, writer and editor, AI skeptic, haver of ADHD and anxiety. A mess, basically. (Profile art by Heidi Parker)
Since we’re doing away with the penny, can we please retire the convention of pricing, e.g., a $5 item at $4.99?

🤣 This is the most epic marathon of dunking I’ve ever seen.
Yeah, man, the only difference between your career and Mark Rufallo’s career is the political stuff.

Laura's observation is correct. It's up to us to ensure the Republicans' analysis is dead wrong.
Iowa Republicans are still bashing trans people at every opportunity. They perceive that it still helps them.

My college kid put on #MuppetsMostWanted tonight, and I’d forgotten what a genuinely funny gag-a-minute comedy in the same category as #Airplane or #TheNakedGun, with catchy comedic songs by Bret McKenzie. An underappreciated gem.

This was entirely about purging a trans instructor from the school and they succeeded. It was aided by a lot of dumb liberals taking it at face value arguing the minutia of grading rubrics while ignoring the obvious bad faith efforts behind this.

I remember being a young nerd, going to my local comic shop and learning the lore from the older nerds on both sides of the counter. This weekend, I was the older nerd educating the staff about the Post-Crisis #Superman characters in the recent movie. I’ve never felt so wise.

This seems like the sort of thing Douglas Adams was born for, if only someone had suggested it.
A thing that I don't think exists in the world but should is a crossover between Peter Davison's incarnation of Doctor Who and P.G.Wodehouse's Jeeves & Wooster titled "Dreadful Bother of the Cybermen -or- What Ho, Dalek!"

Today I learned why leaves change color in the fall. Some nice turns of phrase in this piece, too!

The magical chemistry behind nature’s fall foliage colors - AgriLife Today
When summer fades and fall emerges, lush green tree leaves give way to a variety of warm hues in foliage that mark the changing of seasons.

I agree with everything in this thread, but also: people believe these false claims. Disinformation serves not only to state what “feels true” but to persuade the uninformed. It is still crucial to get the truth out there.
Such a characteristic dynamic, righties saying the protests were "funded by Soros" and lefties responding with fact checks & empirical observations. Ships passing in the night.

What the righties want to say is: the left is fundamentally illegitimate. That, to them, is the core truth.

Watching recent @markhamillofficial.bsky.social interviews, I’m struck by the incomprehensible fact that he hasn’t written an autobiography yet! Talk about an immediate bestseller!

I already didn’t like where this was going, but I really don’t like where this is going.
Huh. I don't remember the federal government asking me what flavor of "white" I am before. This list of what are I think meant to be ethnicities also seems really arbitrary, and doesn't map out onto ethnicities per se. (This is for an NSF annual personnel report for a graduate training program.)

When I first learned that Joe Rogan had Atlantis-promoting guests on his program, I was just amused. But as I looked more into Graham Hancock's work, it came to seem like a useful case study of how skepticism can be a rejection of the scientific method.

Long threads are hard to follow, but I think I got through it all, and I would really like to read the comics from this alternate timeline. In particular, I want to see this take on Superman’s supporting cast.
In my complex mental construction (total fantasy) of how this could work, I'd try to retain Al Milgrom as editor, to handle the line. I'd try to steal a young Keith Pollard from Marvel before he really got going there, and have SUPERMAN by done by Michelinie, Pollard and Layton, presenting a...

Am I crazy, or was it until recently the case that you could subscribe to a Substack without getting email? But lately, the floodgates have opened, and the only option is to unsubscribe. I believe this is what @edzitron.com calls “the rot economy”—products made less useful to drive engagement.

Doing some research, I came across this fascinating article about the life of Eugene Bullard, and I can't believe Hollywood hasn't done anything with his amazing story. He was an athlete, musician, fighter pilot, civil rights activist, and so much more.
