"The real power of imagination is that it helps us envision something better than raw power."

This is a really good read. Every third line feels quotable, and I felt better after reading it.

AIG says no AGI 😂
“Insurers increasingly view AI models’ outputs as too unpredictable and opaque to insure, said Dennis Bertram, head of cyber insurance for Europe at Mosaic. “It’s too much of a black box.”

It shouldn't have to be like this. We shouldn't have to go check the settings in apps that auto-update to find out what privacy horrors we've been opted into lately.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

Hello
A basic sociotechnical problem is that you simply can’t make functional technology in a social environment where there are people that no one can call out on their bullshit

We have been through so many manufactured moral panics about nonsense harmless things.

But this thing keeps demonstrating harms. And we have unlimited money for it. And we have unlimited benefit of the doubt for it.
"Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model by default...tests repeatedly showed that the AI toy dropped its guardrails the longer a conversation went on, until hitting rock bottom on incredibly disturbing topics."

I flagged Mobile Identity as inappropriate in the Play store. "Content felt hostile".
I wrote a review of this. I strongly recommend everyone review or report this app. Google will remove the reviews, but people should say this is wrong.

... The same devices that agents are running Mobile Fortify on? These are the devices on which they should daily take many screenshots and send those to email?

The phones that DHS uses to gather biometrics that they treat as more authoritative than a birth certificate. DHS's phones.
DHS confirmed it has stopped automatically storing officials' text messages.

Instead, officials are supposed to take a screenshot, send that to their work email, download it onto their work computer and run a text-recognition program on it. Every time.

Whether this interaction is human-coded or a "hallucination", a product that lies like this to someone who expresses suicidal ideation is not a product that we should permit to exist.

OpenAI should be dismantled stone by stone and every member of leadership held accountable. This is abhorrent.

Why do I feel like ICE agents are running this Mobile Fortify app on their personal iPhones with no org security controls
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

A rare WaPo editorial these days directly criticizing Trump policies:
“There’s a name for attacks on civilian ships on the high seas: Piracy. That’s also an unfortunately plausible description of the Trump administration’s bombings of vessels around South America that it says are carrying drugs.“
