A friend of mine at uni once claimed that his dad Nigel was the Nigel in the song Making Plans for Nigel. Believed him for ages until I read the Wikipedia for the song and his story totally didn’t check out. Also, he told massive lies about everything else.

My knowledge of XTC doesn’t extend beyond Making Plans For Nigel. But apparently someone’s done a video about how they’re the most underrated band ever so I suppose I’d better check out the rest of their oeuvre.

I have no memory of it, but I wouldn’t put it past me to have made exactly the same joke on Twitter almost exactly 10 years ago. Don’t fancy checking.

Is there ever any mention of this in the actual show itself? Has there ever been an on-screen acknowledgment (out-takes don’t count) that Alex is the boss? Or, to the casual viewer, is Alex still “the assistant”?
