I think this is basically, unfortunately, true of any infrastructure. Google recently took away the right for users to access their own photos via API, because obviously only Google may use your photos to train models. It sucks.

I think because as much as it is trendy to knock it, it is a pattern that does actually work. I find it easier in many cases to think about transforming a shared object under a lock from one valid state to another valid state, than about the distributed and emergent state in actor/messaging systems.

As far as I can tell social media is a machine for taking something reasonable (shaming and scorning the slop peddling) and mixing it in with the unreasonable (people excited for a chance to do racism cosplay) to keep us busy with discourse that ultimately just makes people shout at one another.

Google really are bastards. When they took away user access to your own photos via API, they left a limited escape hatch: if your app creates an album, it _can_ see it. I added some photos to such an album, and they're invisible to the app. The list API responses only include a next page token.
