Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

While we’re banning books…

Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar.

Be. Like. Finland.

A few years ago, a tweet like this—not just pathetic for obvious reasons, but also lame and unfunny—would’ve been ratio’d into the earth. Now it has 22k likes because the other app artificially boosts and bots the worst opinions from the biggest losers.

Just a shame. That’s all.

This is what demographic panic looks like. When people are this uninformed, democracy faces serious headwinds.

“Those seeking to curry favor with the incoming administration now have the opportunity to donate directly to the winning candidate without their names or potential conflicts ever entering the public sphere. And … foreign nationals are allowed to donate to the transition.”
President-elect Trump is keeping secret the names of the donors who are funding his transition effort, a break from tradition that could make it impossible to see what businesses or wealthy people are helping launch his second term. BensingerFahrenthold www.nytimes.com/2024/11/24/u...

Which is precisely why the GOP constantly seeks to control and degrade the education process.

If you keep voters dumb and afraid, they’re far easier to manipulate.
Most of our problems could be solved by properly funding public education.

A year ago, I wrote a review of Erik Larson's "In the Garden of Beasts," an account of the US Ambassador to Germany's tenure there in the early-mid 30s.

I shared lessons from the account that feel more relevant now than ever.

Here is a snippet of them:

Just my 2 cents. But my goal is to ignore the trolls. Give them zero attention. Block them if they annoy me.

I think the worst thing we can do on this site is re-create the ad hominem/ personal attacks that occur across comments on Twitter/insta/tiktok/ etc
