Thanks to new followers and to those who’ve been following for a while. Gradually topping up my photos of carved gravestones, countryside etc - but not much #stainedglass this year, as few churches around here are open.

Day 7 of #31DaysOfGraves - Angel

Angels come in so many different shapes and sizes in Scottish graveyards, we've opted for this Victorian Gothic form, sitting in the shadow of Glasgow Cathedral, forever gently dropping stone flower petals onto the graves of the Smith family below...

A beautiful little Gothic, tower-fronted, church built in 1860, Ardrishaig is our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek. It is located next to the Loch Gilp entrance to the Crinan Canal. The octagonal castellated stage of its tower and the sharp spire were added in 1868 and semi-octagonal transepts in 1904.

Day 6 of #31DaysOfGraves - Gender

In 1972, seven nuns were disinterred from their graves, with iron crosses on each one, in the grounds of their former convent and moved about a half a mile to the monk's graveyard at St Benedict's Abbey, where they were given a single solitary marker by the monks.

Dr Simpson was apparently an authority on church law. Here’s some info about him from Epilogue to the Old Vale and its Memories and from Historic Families etc of the Lennox.

Happily the minister from Bonhill could support their continued use of the room, stating permission was entirely within the minister's gift. He also added that the complainants must prove that the ladies were putting the church to some unacceptable extra cost above usual expenses. (3/5)

Among the many documents retained in this church's archives was this 1910 letter from the minister of Bonhill to the minister of Hillside who'd asked for advice to deal with complaints he'd been getting about certain ladies and the church organist using the vestry between services on a Sunday. Day 4 of #31DaysOfGraves - Languages

This stone has a Gaelic inscription on one side and English on other. It's located in the ancient burial ground behind former Free Church at Ballyhennan, near Arrochar.

Gaelic was in retreat here by mid 19thC so such inscriptions are a comparatively rare sight.
