Absolutely, although apparently local children were terrified of it! You could see the recumbent stone figure through the wall panels and kids would dare each other to go up to (or later, inside) the tomb. Its demolition was a huge loss to the cemetery. :-(

That must have been an absolutely stunning sight when it was in its prime! 😍

#31DaysOfGraves day 8 - glass. Arguably the most famous tomb despite its current state, the "Red Lady" (officially the Robertson mortuary chapel) was erected in 1865 for Mary Ann Robertson (1826–1858). The original red glass roof allowed red coloured daylight to flicker on the stone figure inside.

Day 8 of #31DaysOfGraves - Glass

When visiting a graveyard, have you ever wondered what these flat marble plates, reminiscent of chopping boards, are?

They're the bases of Victorian/Edwardian "Immortelles" that once held fragile memorial ornaments under a glass dome. Not many now survive intact...

There is a wealth of woodwork for #WoodensDay, including the fine ceiling, communion table and the pulpit.

Ardrishaig Parish Church, our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek has, for #WindowsOnWednesday, stained glass by Phil Melville, memorialising the fishing heritage of the area. Unusually, it is lit from inside the bell tower and acts as a vision beacon welcoming any boats to the village’s safe harbour.

The churchyard of Kilmichael Glassary in Argyllshire. No headstones for my family here but they were probably too poor to afford them. Sadly the church is up for sale at the moment - some lovely images of the interior are at www.bellingram.co.uk/property/gla... #31DaysofGraves #Day8 #Glass
A grey granite church sits in a well-kept grassy graveyard with many headstones. It has a square tower topped with a pointed steeple, situated in a tree-lined glen with low hills in the background.

Originally Sherbrooke United Free Church, and now Sherbrooke Mosspark Church, on Nithsdale Road on the southside of Glasgow. Designed by W.F. McGibbon in a 13th Century Gothic style and built around 1900.

Day 7 of #31DaysOfGraves - Angel

Angels come in so many different shapes and sizes in Scottish graveyards, we've opted for this Victorian Gothic form, sitting in the shadow of Glasgow Cathedral, forever gently dropping stone flower petals onto the graves of the Smith family below...

Unable to find any weeping angels among my photos, this is technically a winged soul, seen on several stones in Collace churchyard in Perthshire. The inscription is very difficult to read, even with the assistance of the MI book! #31DaysofGraves #Day7 #Angel
A pointed sandstone grave marker in a leafy setting. The only clearly visible part is the top of the front, showing a face with wings emanating from either side - a winged soul.

Edinburgh’s most beautiful building?

One of the most stunning Gothic buildings along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh is St Giles.

Though it is often referred to as a cathedral, it is actually a High Kirk, meaning it’s a parish church of the Church of Scotland.
