One of my favorite discoveries while writing this was the New York Times' nondescript headline following Pelosi's first general election win: "DEMOCRAT ELECTED IN SAN FRANCISCO." Her retirement generated far different headlines!

Kevin McCarthy told Republicans this summer he wanted to raise $100 million to stop California redistricting. So far he's absolutely *nowhere* near that goal. punchbowl.news/archive/1082...

Tired: Donors wasting massive amounts on Kevin McCarthy's "Revenge Tour."

Wired: Donors not bothering to contribute to Kevin McCarthy's quest to stop California redistricting.

It was a true shock when Gov. Jimmy Carter used his 1971 inaugural address to proclaim, “The time for racial discrimination is over.”
December 30, 2024 at 2:38 PM
Carter told civil rights leader Vernon Jordan during that campaign, “You won't like my campaign, but you will like my administration.” He wasn’t kidding about that campaign.

Carter took third in 1966 primary and immediately began preparing to run again in 1970. To win, though, he had to beat one of the state’s most popular politicians
December 30, 2024 at 2:33 PM
Carter’s ads also helped the virtual unknown get his name out during his first statewide campaign.
