Bluesky academics, let’s get to know each other! Quote & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren’t working on but keep thinking about.

1. What schools can learn from shooting after action reports?
2. The school safety organization ecosystem.

Happy to announce my first publication from my dissertation research. In this special issue in Leading & Managing, I examined how school safety leaders used different types of imagination to bring school safety practices to life.

Excited for my recent co-written, open-access teaching case article on hoax school shootings! #schoolsafety

Let's discuss: What's a lesser-known, everyday school emergency that educators and leaders respond to?

To be clear, I’m not catastrophizing. Schools, districts, and states need to look at where they’re receiving #schoolsafety monies. DOJ for SROs? Ed dept for mental health? SAMHSA?

What’s your backup? Community partnerships? Wrap-around services?

These parent prosection are certainly warranted, but I am very skeptical they would affect the likelihood of future tragedies. In many of these cases, parents are in such denial that they likely can't imagine their kid could become a school shooter, much less being prosecuted for it
Colin Gray was indicted last month on 29 charges, including second-degree murder, manslaughter, cruelty to children and reckless conduct, in connection with the Sept. 4 attack at Apalachee High School, where his son, Colt, allegedly opened fire on students and staff.
Father of Georgia school shooting suspect pleads not guilty to murder
The case against Colin Gray marks the first time the parent of an alleged school shooter has been charged with murder.

Great day at @uceagsc.bsky.social Grad Student Symposium! What a great way to discuss research and have dedicated feedback.

@uceagsc.bsky.social and @aeraedresearch.bsky.social what about adding conference presentation shares?
Yessssss! Journal editors and board members let’s do this! Folks on academic org committees! We can make the case to at the very least change the “Your Twitter handle” box on everything to something like “Your social media profile” #commsky

I for one would be thrilled by “Share to Bluesky”
We strongly suggest that academic publishers and other platforms that host research rapidly implement a Share to Bluesky button for their articles. Here's how:

Today I learned that "no person may transmit ... a recording or simulation" of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) sound outside of an authentic emergency notification or system test. This is important because of yelling fire in a crowded theater AND the boy who cried wolf. www.fcc.gov/enforcement/...

It's satisfying that the company that publishes the same article after every school shooting, @theonion.com, purchased the company that fueled school shooting conspiracy theories. www.bbc.com/news/article...
The Onion buys Alex Jones's Infowars at auction
Infowars was auctioned as part of a defamation ruling after Jones falsely called the Sandy Hook School shooting a hoax.

As a teacher, one of the most important lessons I learned was being “respectful.” Some people people act as “treat me as a human and I treat you as a human.” Others act as “treat me as an authority or I won’t treat you as a human.” I was today years old when I learned that “safety” is similar. 1/2

I was 15 years old when the Columbine shooting happened. 25 years later, firearms are the leading cause of death among children and teens and school shootings persist. We can (and must) do so much better. Grateful to the @latimes for the chance to write this piece:

For decades, 911 call takers have had three main options: send emergency medical responders, fire and police.
Many 911 call centers are understaffed, and the job has gotten harder
More cities are adopting alternative response models, where mental health clinicians respond instead of police. The question of who to send usually rests with 911 workers, who are often overworked and...
