Quietly wandering the South Downs
macro - butterflies - mushrooms - wildflowers
Lovely thread. Read it.
For around 30years now my wife and I have shouted “TRIFLE!” at each other at random moments. Just did a good one across the car park of Springtime Nurseries in Crews Hill 👊

Just hopping on here to share this and see whether it works for people as an image, what do you think?

I am obsessed with finding the teeniest of mushrooms on the forest floor. I love that they are stretching upwards, just like the trees, undaunted by the height difference.

Sleeping bee for #macromonday I love finding bees asleep attached to flowers, like they’d drifted off mid pollen collection.

Ignore the cold and grey and gloom, look for the Spring…! Lovely to see the daffs just starting to pop up around the place

These were two of my favourite butterflies that I found last year, a male and female common blue cosied up for the night.

More mushroom, this one had a very fairyland feel to it. Could imagine a tiny fairy person using it as a throne.

Just a very nice mushroom.

I’ve traditionally found it hard to photograph Orange Tips, one of our earliest butterflies, because they’re usually haring about at the speed of light. Last year I was delighted to finally find one roosting, having visually interrogated most of the garlic mustard in Sussex.

It was a lovely low-tide-sunrise combo yesterday morning. Cold but so beautiful.

Just a butterfly casually laying some eggs.

Wife: you better not have found the peace of wild things again. Have you been in the woods?

Me, serenely chewing on a stick: no

I am constantly astonished by the creatures of this world. This is an Orange Leaf butterfly. I could have stared at it for hours.

I find snowdrops quite hard to photograph, exposing them well and getting enough detail is a challenge. Plus they aren’t around for very long to practise on.

But I do really like trying.

The sunset yesterday was ASOLUTELY EXUBERANT and, honestly, a bit show offy.

I haven’t altered the saturation levels on this at all. Just blacks and whites.

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this.

Smashed records.

Not long until these little friends start showing their faces…

I spend quite a lot of time at this time of year thinking of the next time of year.

One of the things I care about with my photography is making an image of a subject as it is, telling that story. For me, altering the subject and its environment is akin to airbrushing nature. I think we need to love real more; ourselves and the world.

One of those days when I need to be more daisy.

I also take picture of mushrooms.

I do not polish them first. That would dislodge their hats.

I am grateful to live near a butterfly garden, it gives me a fix during the long, cold non-butterfly months. Here’s a Blue Wave butterfly hatching an escape plan.

I would just like to point out that it’s 4.45pm and it’s not dark yet. The light is returning.

I find compositions really hard to see in big scale, and much easier in little scale. But here’s a go at big scale from a few weeks ago.
