For my part, I really hope this is good and I am curious to see how they do. I fully accept it might not work, but it is true of a lot of things. I do think it can be done in a way that will make for a good Traveler style game. I will withhold judgement till I see more.

From their announcement, they indicate they are keeping the classic character creation, Lifepaths, and all of the scifi elements associated with Traveler. As one of my favorite games in the d20 boom era was Dawning Star, I firmly believe this is doable.

Folks seem to assume using a 5e base means you have to use all of D&D. All it means is the dice mechanics & some of the rules definition. People acting like it means you will bring in wizards or Tieflings are displaying a lack of imagination. There are a few games who show that is not required.

I agree d20 gets used in some things that it shouldn't, but not everything built off 5e not in the fantasy genre is a mistake. It is good for games you want high adventure and swingy action, with character power progression. Given they are making a new setting for this, that can work here.
