For the first devotional entry in our week exploring Advent in a time of starvation, Rev. Rebecca Barnes of the @pcusa.bsky.social Hunger Program writes that our seasonal practices must include a gritty resolution to act in the face of injustice.

The most dangerous thing about Hegseth is he thinks he's doing God's work. That mindset has justified a lot of war crimes, crusades, & atrocities. Reporters need to be including this angle:

1st preacher at Hegseth's monthly Pentagon prayer services was his former pastor in Doug Wilson's denomination. Preachers since then: 3 Southern Baptist pastors, a grandson of Billy Graham, & a former NFL player accused of insider trading:

It's Christ the King Sunday, which was created 100 years ago. But the claim "Christ is King" is used both to challenge & advance #ChristianNationalism, so we should consider the theological tension:

1. Since I get asked about this: I think this is both a reasonable position and one I deeply disagree with — bc it's not a standard we apply to other political terms.

E.g., you'll get different answers if you ask folks to define "liberal" too — but we still use it. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/19/u...

Many pastors who have spoken against Christian Nationalism will use this coming Christ the King Sunday to remind people of the dangers of that ideology.

While that seems like a natural implication, a Christian Nationalist politician just got the Michigan House to recognize the liturgical day.
