Obviously I recognise George but I don’t get the reference I’m afraid

His reputation was tarnished irreparably with the line "I have my books and my poetry to protect me" but so many great, smart, evocative lyrics over the years

Nobody ever says Paul Simon but the answer is actually Paul Simon.

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

Oh, I just learned Véronique Vincent of Aksak Maboul and the Honeymoon Killers has died. Apparently the only Belgian to ever grace the cover of NME (not sure if they'd true but it's possible). Commiserations to Marc Hollander and the whole Crammed family. What sad news.

You might well be right. He's probably feeling bullish after the "unite the kingdom" rally

Cheeky, I like it. Do you have my email? I obviously can't promise anything as I don't commission what I write about but I'll certainly give it a listen!

Try telling that to Yes.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Haha, basically Smash Hits with shagging, which is what you need when you're 19

Hooray! I was beginning to think I'd imagined it haha. I'm very glad to hear that it made a similar impression on someone else

I think I learnt everything I wanted to know about sex but was afraid to ask from Karen Krizanovich's Dear Karen columns. They were eyewateringly brilliant to a small person in a very conservative milieu. I guess that's what ChatGBT is for these days.

Everyone goes on about The Face but it was Sky magazine that helped shape my worldview as an impressionable late adolescent. It's funny how magazines die and then everyone forgets about them, but Sky was the slightly older, cooler, metropolitan friend that I needed living in a small town.

Watched the first series and it was ace. Must dive in again at some point!

Also, I get really put off by hype. Adolescence, The Traitors, Peaky Blinders... can't be arsed mate

I didn't watch it until about 10 years ago. Absolutely love it now and The Return was magnificent but I was too busy going out and getting up to no good when it was on the first time.

What's Lord Mandelson if not a crank and weirdo? And as for Wes Streeting...

The Greens escape stigma because people are desperate for a progressive left wing party and they're the best (most organised) we're likely to get.

It's total Partridge when anyone introduces Madonna as "the material girl", especially Peter Drury a few seconds ago.

The feedback has been very positive so far. Enough to allay any concerns

That's reassuring, thanks!

I was looking forward to this until I remembered how underwhelmed I was by Inherent Vice. That's going to be a problem isn't it?

One Battle After Another has been getting a lot of “best movie of the decade” talk, and I’m inclined to agree but I’m curious — what’s the competition?
