I don't just say this just to be an ass, Bluesky being largely non-participating onlookers who seem to like telling others how to protest is problematic for folks on the ground.

Even protests that are partly organized on Bluesky (such as Tesla Takedown) are largely attended by folks not on Bluesky.
An important piece of context for all the discussion about protests on Bluesky today is that Bluesky usually does not attract the sort of people who actually go to protests.

As such you should probably limit how much energy you spend on arguments about protests here.

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

Cool cool. @durbin.senate.gov, @amyklobuchar.com @klobuchar.senate.gov @whitehouse.senate.gov are looking to team up with MAGA to give Donald Trump the power to censor anything he wants on the Internet.

Do they not recognize what will happen?
NEW: As early as next week, Senators plan to introduce the first bipartisan bill to repeal Section 230, the landmark internet law

I spoke with congressional aides to get the details of the ambitious effort, which internet experts described as akin to extortion

Ok I know this is old-man irritability but I don’t care if Mahmoud Khalil has a pregnant wife, I don’t care if he and his wife are childfree, I don’t care if he’s in a fucking polycule with a hedgehog and a jar of mayonnaise, NOBODY should be detained for protected speech, including singletons.

This is pretty much why my social media activity in general has slowed to a crawl.

Ya'll on the micro-blogging sphere (Bluesky, Mastodon, and so on) wonder why nobody is doing anything while being so online that you haven't noticed that people are doing things.
You folks are asking "where are the protests?" and making snide remarks about gun ownership while my city seems to have protests regularly now and communities are keeping Nazis away with armed deterrence.

I'm not sure if we live in the same reality sometimes...

A reminder that you should probably be extremely skeptical of how any news outlet portrays community defense.

Minorities taking steps to protect themselves tends to scare the crap out of those who run the media.

I've never seen so many mobilizations, rallies and actions, honestly. They're happening pretty constantly, in cities but also in small towns and in every single state. They're not getting tons of coverage, but they're happening, and they're growing. Join one, or start one, you're not alone in this.
"Why aren't people in the streets" okay here are people in the streets in my town of 7,000, checkmate babe.

Your regular reminder that §230 protects YOU, the person reading this post, from being sued for reposting things just as much as it protects "Big Tech" from things that still wouldn't be a viable cause of action because your problem is not with §230, it's with the first amendment
There’s an active fascist takeover going on. Let’s check in with the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary committee to see how they’re resisting it.

Oh… oh I see. They’re trying to blow up Section 230 and open the floodgates for Trump to censor the Internet. Inspiring!

Somehow the microblogging sphere (bluesky, fediverse, etc.) feels like the most up to date source for all the awful things that are happening nationally and yet somehow totally disconnected from what's happening locally as a result.

In preparation for today’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, state police forced over 100 homeless men and women onto buses under threat of arrest, dumping them in an unheated warehouse. Tents destroyed, belongings lost. Press are barred from the warehouse.

The price tag for this cruelty? $17.5 million
Louisiana coerced unhoused people into an unheated warehouse – and paid $17.5m for it
Dozens of New Orleanians were bused to a site with insufficient heating and blankets days before the city is to host the Super Bowl

The FDA might not take H5N1 seriously but every Mask Bloc is stocking up on N95s.

SNAP might get cut off but Food Not Bombs will still be handing out food each week.

FEMA might get gutted but Mutual Aid Disaster Relief will still be mucking & gutting houses.

I want to make this clear: diversity is extremely popular. THAT is what they’re furious about. They lost that battle in the culture and want to reverse it by force.
NOW: More than 98% of #Costco shareholders have just rejected an anti-DEI measure

The attempt to force Costco to audit their #DEI work was by an anti-inclusion lobby group:

"The proponent's broader agenda is not reducing risk for the Company but abolition of diversity initiatives." - Costco Board

I'm still around, but I'm in the process of figuring out how I want to use social media given that I'm constantly faced with evidence that "people who want good online" and "people who do good in real life" are separate worlds of people who have very little in common.

The last part is key. Violence as self-defence is an essential component of survival. As I teach in martial arts, and have done for decades, if you can't avoid the situation, all the de-escalation in the world only works if the enemy is prepared to stop fighting. If not, you have to fight back.

BlueSky is trying to monetize so let's show them some numbers:

Reskeet this if you refuse to pay for BlueSky+ until trust & safety decides to prioritize marginalized users.

That's $96 / year of lost revenue for each reskeet...
