Hi! I'm H.S. Kallinger, a disabled, queer author of queer SFF. I have a complete, published psych/urban fantasy series available at multiple online retailers, & I'm working on a new one. My works are character-driven, blend real science with fantasy, and I like to kick tropes in the face.
Lol, still have polycythemia, but now it's leukocytosis* instead of erythrocytosis**, and it's the worst I've ever seen in my labs before 🤣

My blood cannot behave.

*WBC, platelets, and neutrophil auto are all up
**RBC and hemoglobin are good, hematocrit is high but not clinical

Happy Monday, friends! Time is flying. We're now at 9 days until #BookBazaar25 ends.

The Dark Side of Super's audio book, while funded, still has plenty of room for more heroes!

There's swag, books, art prints, and more!

Spread the word, #Booksky, and let's go!

Movie set where I grew up.

I was surprised there were any. I was more surprised that there were none about the Oregon Trail.

There's a Hallmark movie that claims it's from my hometown, but I'm not watching it to confirm, and Arrowhead is in KC.

This one PROBABLY has the right city, lol.

I was supposed to be working Planet Anime this weekend, but my pain is not only made worse with physical exertion (since it's from a blood disorder, that makes sense), but I woke up with sciatica so bad my left leg can't really support me.

I hate being so damn unreliable in my health.

Zack, the protagonist of my Lost Humanity series, actually had this option. He chose to be a villain, & the power & wealth poured in. He never stopped wanting to NOT be a villain, but he also refused to let it go. He blamed the villain he lackeyed for, but it had to be in him, too.

Had fun in Pathfinder tonight! We hit level 3, and, as I do, I waited to do my homework until today XD

It was almost 3 hours where I didn't have to be aware of how much pain I've been in nor do anything to make it worse.

I'm so happy that technology (and friends) gives me this opportunity now 💙

This isn't even a hard choice for Gabby. He doesn't want absolute power--just the amount he's supposed to have to influence the world to do better--and he's prepared to live broke rather than do anything that could harm others (though being a doctor is definitely in part about money).

Gabby is a hugger & a snuggler. He likes 'em platonic, romantic, it's all good. He likes being petted & touched in general. He's very high physical touch.

Becoming a touch-empath with no way to block it out for years was, therefore, a nightmare for him, although he did eventually make it a strength
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

How does your character feel about physical touch?

Are they fans of a handshake, hug, pat on the back, etc?

Do they prefer to keep their distance?

Does it matter how close they are to the other person?

This excerpt is from Blood Dhampir, Book 2 of the Found Humanity series.

Jax had a shit childhood, and a lot of their story is inspired by or taken directly from BS that happened to me & friends who also grew up in deep poverty. Being 'adopted' by a middle-class family raises trauma.

An excerpt featuring my trans character: check.

Here's Gabby coming out to his mom while explaining his partner's new pronouns in a burst of info-dump-stress-babbling (pretty much one breath per paragraph, lol) that gives you both an early attempt at working out his gender(s) & his AuDHD.

In all the conversations about migrant rights, remember the children—many of them undocumented—who labor alongside their parents to put food in your grocery stores. They have no protections or rights, working invisibly for pennies.

Gonna shout out to @zombieisok.gay as a trans artist who I deeply admire. I connected with his art style immediately and love it to death. He also seems like such a sweet dude, and I love seeing what he comes up with.
#SFFChat Q3: Shout out a trans writer or artist whose work you admire (or a trans character from a trans author's work!).

My MC, Gabriel (he/she/xe depending), is a nonbinary (genderfluid) trans girl dhampir. Two of xyr partners are a genderqueer human and a 'gender is nothing to me' intersex Nephilim (both they/them).

There are a LOT more trans and/or nonbinary characters, but those are the 3 we meet first.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat Q1: For the Trans Day of Remembrance, share a trans* (including nonbinary, Two-Spirit, or otherwise gender nonconforming) character from your work, OR, if you have none, share how one of your characters engages with gender!

OMG, so many video games have influenced me over my life. I'd say one of the most recent was Cyberpunk 2077 just because it got me more interested in the genre (I was already passingly into it) and helped immerse me enough that I wrote a post-cyberpunk story myself.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat is here!

Intro: Tell us about yourself & share a videogame that’s influenced you! Or, if no games have influenced you, share a less-discussed form of inspiration!

And there is so little fraud or abuse, and what exists of it is usually people who are in need in very real ways anyway but just didn't meet the particular criteria demanded of them.

SNAP is GOOD for the economy. The only reason to shut it down is ignorance or cruelty.
The problem with SNAP “fraud” and “abuse” is that we’ve made a system where when people ask for help with food we don’t just give it to them.

The problem is that you’ve labeled any use at all of it as “fraud” or “abuse.”

I was in my 30s before I had ANY accurate words, and it was a struggle that took me years to figure out the right ones. I didn't even understand what was dysphoria until I was treating it, and I realized I had been forbidden from knowing myself.
We also "didn't exist" because we had no words to describe ourselves.

The only reason I didn't stop using she/her pronouns until 2019 is that prior to that, I didn't know I had another option.
Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Trans people have literally always been here; every time I see someone sneering "oh but there were no trans people when I was in high school," well. I dated a trans girl in high school, and was close friends with a trans guy.

I started telling stories when I was too little to remember. I started writing things down (poems, songs, little stories) for non-school reasons around age 13/14.

My first published work was an essay that was put in a teaching magazine in high school. Then a poem in a contest and a play in another.
#Writers, when did you start to write? ✍️

I started writing after college as a continuation of a journal I kept. Then I started essaying about my favorite books, movies, and anime. Reviews & reflections. Short fiction came as a challenge to myself to write my own Twilight Zone season.
