Hi! I'm H.S. Kallinger, a disabled, queer author of queer SFF. I have a complete, published psych/urban fantasy series available at multiple online retailers, & I'm working on a new one. My works are character-driven, blend real science with fantasy, and I like to kick tropes in the face.
A banner for H.S. Kallinger featuring six book covers: Hotel of Lost Souls, Pet, Bridges, Predators, Castles, and World of Lost souls in the front center, while behind, the image is split into two: on the left is a fiery scene with a partial image of a topless tan man in jeans with his hands together by medical straps, holding a black shock collar. In the center, fire is bisected diagonally with red on the top and blue on the bottom. To the right is a dark blue scene with sparkling glitter lights over someone barely visible with perhaps pink hair and closed eyes colored by dark teal blue lighting.

That sounds fantastic 💙I'm happy for you!

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Gabby gets massively cursed at one point in the series, which leads to a second curse that reveals the first (although the second curse was given as a 'gift' -- fairies aren't always the best at picking those out).

#QueerPrompts October 9: Curses or bad luck in story?
Graphics: The background is pumpkins surrounding a stack of books. The border has broken chains saying "BANNED", a rainbow saying LGBTQ History, books wrapped in tape or chains, pride flags, and cute Halloween characters.
Text: "October 2025" on top and "#QueerPrompts" and "Host: @CJAralore" on the bottom, all in a rainbow font.
Center text is:

Not feeling like a financial burden!

Oh. Wait.

Thing is, this kind of question doesn't have a fun answer for people who are permanebtly disabled and married (therefore ineligible for disability benefits). My UBI would go to living expenses.

I might get to buy a little art, as a treat, though!

If Universal Basic Income (UBI) were to give you more breathing room, what new hobbies or activities would you pursue that currently feel out of reach?

I don't really do favorites, but scrolling through some of my fave sapphic stories, I remembered THIS villain(ess)-loving masochist (Rei) and how much I enjoyed this anime 😅

I struggle with this one. I have the first book shelved under Urban Fantasy and LGBTQ fiction broadly for booksellers. For readers? It's queer urban sci-fantasy coming-of-age.

For my *current* WIP in this series, it's easier--it's definitely urban fantasy/portal fantasy.

We like to root for the underdogs, right? Well, here's a bundle of books that haven't received the attention they deserve.

It includes the 4th book in my Lost Humanity series, Predators! If you never got to continue past Bridges, this is your chance!

Graphic that reads "Itch.io Under-Rated Bundle, Oct 9th-13th, Bringing attention to the best books you've never heard of." Burnell, The Spider's Friend by M.C. Burnell, Disappearance and Other Short Stories by PD Loupee, Memories of Sorcery and Sand by Joanna Maciejewska, Kranlian Rendezvous by Simon Wolfe, The Shadow of Arcadia by Alan K. Image of a redwood forest at night containing shadowy shapes with glowing eyes in the blue spaces between trees. H.S. Kallinger is written in green at the bottom. Title text, Predators, is a gradient of gray fading into blood red over the thin trees. The top reads 'Book Four of the Lost Humanity series' in white text.

See, this is completely wild to me as someone who has absolutely no response to codeine whatsoever 😅 I was prescribed Tylenol 3 for PMS in high school, which i just assumed was like three acetaminophen pills for all it did for me.

Otoh, my husband is dangerously allergic.

9) People are, all things considered, pretty good.

I see twenty thousand people a day, and maybe two of them are assholes. Even on a stressful day, even in an unfamiliar environment, even hungry and tired and on a timer.

That's a *much* better ratio than folks realize.

There's a million-dollar mobile game to be made out of the job of line management at airports, by the way. Shortening and lengthening queues so that people are never hanging out in an unmanaged hallway space and never walking through useless empty queues.

I don't think abled people can really understand how it feels to have someone say living 1-2 days in your life is an unbearable nightmare they don't think they could ever do.

Do they genuinely think we were prepared for it? When other choices are unacceptable/impossible, you do what you have to.

My current WIP is set in the near past in another version of Earth that has (science fiction-based) vampires, 9 years after the very beginning of A Demon to Save Me and 7.5 years after the majority of the book.

Hey--I'm proud of the work you've done.

No, stop that. It doesn't matter if you don't feel like it was enough or recent enough. I'm proud of you.

Keep going or rest as needed. You can do this 💙

Seeing a complete, edited document feels very different, and you have time to adapt to the corrections, and because they're all already there, you can get through them a lot faster, too.

At least, IME.

This is how my first editor worked out, as I'd send her the Google Doc, and she'd edit directly in it. It was Not Good. Totally not her fault, but seeing her do her job in real time made me want to defend my work (I was also a baby writer, so I needed time to unlearn that anyway).
