I freaking love maps. This is our current map of the Mountain Fell, where the land of your birth and its neighbors shape your abilities. Our goal is to hopefully create a more detailed map, to include cities and towns. My favorite place so far is the capital of Evergreen.

Day 16 of #FantasyIndiesFebruary

In the later books of my Oracle of Delphi series WIP, expectations are relatively low for the Pythiai, compared to those in earlier books. Much changed from the Classical to the Hellenistic periods, and even more in the Roman period. +

Show & Tell was fun when we were kids, but I've seen more than a few writers get caught up in what do to, when, and how. The Self-Editing Series on my Patreon is intended to empower you through working on your own book, so of course we needed a lesson on this!

Atomic Con, which I will be a guest at, is offering a limited sponsorship.
Details below:
SPONSOR SPECIAL! As part of our film workshop, we'd like Sean Krumbholz to do a makeup demonstration. The materials to do this type of demonstration are very expensive and not really in our budget.

Explicitly, Tatyana's 'Thermonuclear Lance', a will fueled 100 million C beam of light and heat is the most raw destruction any have managed.

However, Autemá's Mountain Without a Peak is a metaphor that there are no limits, and this inspires them. Tat, Raine, Hawó, and others are always climbing.🧵

This might be a tricky question, but in your opinion, what is the ✨️most powerful✨️ use of magic in your system?

Of course, this all depends on how you define "powerful"! It may not necessarily have anything to do with how much damage is dealt...

There are special squads of bee soldiers tasked with enforcing the laws established by the Melipenati government but there’s a catch.

The Melipenati have so thoroughly weakened society outside the Hive that there’s no real need to police. Human crime is not their concern 1/3

The most powerful magics are quite rare, and some are likely lost forever now that the dragons are gone.

Perhaps the most powerful of these lost techniques (depending on how you measure it) was the ability to sever the body's connection to the Stream.

This is something I haven't developed too much because ACAB (and I don't want to think about it), but something I foresee being used to enforce laws are likely drawn from the specialization of Traveler that opts to hunker down and patrol a city-state's physical borders.

#FantasyIndiesFebruary 16: Character Expectations

From Dorilian's birth people have expected (or feared) he might awaken the Rill god-machine.

Hans was expected to be a spare heir (i.e. not much).

Aubrey was expected to make a good marriage and become a Mother of consequence.

#FebruaryWorldbuilders 16: Law enforcement

The Triempery's big cities have officers of the law. They capture thieves or assaulters and bring them to courts. They are paid by the city/town.

Most of the time, whether city or countryside, citizens catch and deliver. In some cases they also punish.

What expectations are put on your characters?

In Serpentus, Owen is expected to defend the city of Stone Hill, even though he doesn't have much military support (and no magical help.) But he takes his duty to the crown seriously and does what he can, despite the odds.

Intro
I'm AJ. I write various fantasy books (mostly epic, some urban, some cozy) and occasionally sci-fi.

This month I'll be focusing mostly on Serpentus because
1) it's in #SPFBO (which officially starts today and
2) Serpentus will celebrate a birthday this month!
