Mireia slashed the khopesh so violently through the air that Kena had to take a step back.
“Don’t tell me what to do,” she muttered.
“I don’t want you throwing yourself into danger when you don’t need to.”
“I’ll throw myself wherever I please.”
“Mireia!” He caught her by the arm, forcing her to stop, and looked her pleadingly in the eye. “I can’t—I can’t lose you.”
That finally broke through her defenses: not just the words, but the way he said them, and the look in his eyes. She saw what he really meant.
