I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

My new queer Portland magical girl novel is out and it’s very gay and full of big action and big feelings and I think you might really enjoy it.

I’m very close to another big deal of a milestone for my launch month and I’d love to reach it, with your help. 🥹

I think we should be more upset and disturbed by the fact that every chronically ill person has at least 1 story of not being listened to, or ignored or worse, by medical professionals.

Perfect timing, I'm getting back into the habit of writing mini reviews 🥰
Okay, because I need to try and re-spark some writing community joy after… *gestures at everything* how about a revisit on a way you can absolutely support authors you love for zero dollars: by dropping a low-stress, three-sentence review somewhere.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

I would not be where I am today without the editor-ing of @rowanchurch.bsky.social working with me on story and character edits and @tokenweirdgirl.bsky.social doing my final technical edits. They’ve made Magica Riot so much better than I could do by myself.

Great editors are ESSENTIAL.
By the way, it's National Editor Appreciation Day.

Nobody ever reads a great article and thinks, "Dang, that was some tight editing." But editing is a big part of how it got to be great.

So writers, if you've ever worked with a good editor, shout 'em out.

Question your programming. If your default reaction to someone protecting abuse is but they're nice / soft spoken / do good work and to someone fighting it is I'm not sure about them.

That is how abuse works. Grooming to protect not only the abusers, but the rings protecting them.

Please see.

I promise, your favorite authors and indie presses hate capitalism too, guys, but turns out: we still need to eat and we still live in a society where we need to earn money to pay for goods and services!
ya know, I've really been struggling with motivation. it's hard to feel like I'm constantly swimming upstream, and I'm exhausted. but I'd managed to get myself enough to get through the editing I desperately need to do...

...and then I saw this piracy bullshit.

When people hear me reading from my books, I get great, excited feedback. Last week I read a passage from my 3rd one that had an entire room on the edge of their seats.
But trying to get anyone to BUY my books anymore is like pulling teeth. I have so much interest, but small sales these days +

Listen, if they're gonna relentlessly let you know the McRib is back, you can damn sure have a full Pride Rock moment with your work. Shame is the little death. Let it pass through you. All that remains is whee.
If you're an author being published by small and tiny presses, please shamelessly promote your work, however much your temperament might militate against it. I've seen many wonderful authors at this level so quickly forgotten when they die, you deserve all the readers you can get while you're alive.

If people take small sff presses seriously, the editors should be paid and editing be recognised as a profession.

But... people do take sff presses for granted and moan when the press collapses.

So... I don't know what the problem is. 😑😭

This has applied to every community I've ever been a part of, and it's why we can't have nice things.
You have to have a larger number of people dedicated to keeping the things they want/love afloat or they will die. "Support what you love" means also putting the work in to sustain it.
Thinking about it, and the problem with the local scene is the same at scale. A small number of people are making the cool stuff happen without help or compensation and when they burn out, part of the community collapses, and everything is worse off for it

Today would be a great day to pick up one or more of my books. They're a series but stand alone easily, and if you're in the US you can even buy them directly from my website.
If you need a big dose of learning how to shake off self-doubt, I recommend Cast a Shadow of Doubt.
