On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the women shaping the future of science 👩‍🔬

In 2023, women made up only 41% of scientists and engineers in the EU. Denmark has the highest representation of female scientists and engineers (50.8%), while Hungary has the lowest (30.7%).

Apropos of never ending discussions about whether ANNs are "good" models of the nervous system, here is a slide I present to masters students showing a network that is found in motor control circuits *across phyla* (that's pretty ubiquitous!) I ask them to guess what it does...

Ok I finally got it - this is the point of the new eLife system!
To ensure reviews are published to reduce redundancy & propagation of rubbish science

This was not clear to me until now though 🧐😅
This is critical. Currently papers are published that have fundamental flaws that reviewers have noticed at other journals. I’m dealing with one now where we know it is is completely wrong and we know the authors have been told this previously. If we were any other journal we’d reject

Elsevier’s revenue is £3 billion with profits of £1.2 billion

Springer Nature’s revenue is £1.5 billion and profits are £0.4 billion

Were does all this profit go?

Not to us academics who not only provide the product itself but then add the key value to it with free peer review

Every brain network scientist should read this imo. There's an enormous amount of confusion about what we're actually doing with "correlation matrices* and "functional connectivity". We need to slow down a bit and think about these issues.
That's my view ofc, others may disagree.

A cool discussion w/ some colleagues from the #NeuroSky community has triggered a new #ComplexityThoughts 👀

Regardless if you work w/ 🧠 or 🧬🧫, often we attack inverse problems in 🧪 w/ methods hiding tons of assumptions. I write about the case of #ComplexNetworks 👇

New paper out in @ScienceMagazine! In 8 studies (multiple platforms, methods, time periods) we find: misinformation evokes more outrage than trustworthy news, when it does it's shared more + ppl are less likely to read before sharing. w/ @killianmcl1 @Klonick @mollycrockett 🧵👇
